Rear Camera Disconnected
Thinkware Dash Cam
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Thinkware Rear Camera Disconnected (announced as 'Rear camera is not connected') means the front unit has lost communication with the rear-channel camera — the camera cable has come loose, the cable has been damaged, or the rear camera itself has a fault. The front camera continues recording. Re-seat the cable connections at both ends to restore the rear channel.
Affected Models
- Thinkware U1000 2CH
- Thinkware F800 Pro 2CH
- Thinkware Q800 Pro 2CH
- Thinkware X1000 2CH
- Thinkware F200 Pro 2CH
Common Causes
- The coaxial cable connecting the front unit to the rear camera has come loose at one or both ends
- The cable has been pinched, cut, or damaged during installation or a door-slam impact
- Extreme temperature change caused the cable connector to contract and lose contact
- The rear camera unit itself has developed a fault or has been physically damaged
- The cable is not the correct Thinkware-compatible cable for the specific model
How to Fix It
-
Check the cable connection at the rear camera unit first
Locate the rear camera (typically mounted on the rear windshield). Find where the cable plugs into the rear camera body. Press the connector firmly until it clicks or seats fully. A partially inserted connector is the most common cause of this alert.
-
Check the cable connection at the front unit
At the front unit, locate the rear camera port (usually labelled REAR or marked with an icon). Unplug the cable and firmly reinsert it. On some Thinkware models, the rear camera port has a screw-lock ring — tighten it finger-tight after reinserting.
-
Inspect the cable run for damage or pinching
Follow the entire cable route — typically run along the A-pillar, headliner, and C-pillar. Look for sections where the cable was pinched under the headliner trim, a door seal, or a panel clip. Any kinked or crushed section of the cable can break the internal conductors and cause a loss of signal.
-
Test with a known-good cable if available
If you have access to a compatible replacement cable, swap it in to determine whether the existing cable is at fault. A faulty cable versus a faulty rear camera will behave identically — the test cable isolates the cause. Thinkware replacement cables are available from authorised dealers.
-
Contact Thinkware support if the rear camera unit itself has failed
If connections and the cable are confirmed good but the rear camera is still not detected, the rear camera module has an internal fault. Contact Thinkware support with your model number and proof of purchase. Thinkware cameras typically have a 1-year warranty covering the rear camera module.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will the front camera keep recording if the rear is disconnected?
Yes — the front camera continues recording normally when the rear camera is disconnected. Only the rear channel is lost. The Rear Camera Disconnected alert is triggered once on power-up and is then logged in the app, but it does not affect front-channel recording in any way.
Can I use a third-party cable to connect the rear camera on a Thinkware dash cam?
Thinkware rear cameras use a proprietary coaxial cable with a specific connector type. Standard CCTV or AV cables are not compatible. Use only genuine Thinkware cables — third-party cables with incorrect impedance or connector design can cause signal noise, image quality issues, or continued disconnection alerts.
