SD Card Error
Thinkware Dash Cam
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Thinkware SD Card Error (announced via voice alert and shown in the Thinkware Dash Cam Link app) means the camera cannot read the microSD card. No recording takes place while this error is active. A corrupted file system, a loose card, or an incompatible card are the most common causes. Reformat the card using the Thinkware app or Windows to restore recording.
Affected Models
- Thinkware U1000
- Thinkware F800 Pro
- Thinkware Q800 Pro
- Thinkware X1000
- Thinkware F200 Pro
Common Causes
- The SD card has a corrupted file system from an interrupted write during a power loss
- The card is not fully seated in the slot and is making poor contact
- The card capacity or speed class is below Thinkware's minimum specification
- The card has reached end-of-life write cycle exhaustion
- The card slot contacts are dirty or the card contacts are oxidised
How to Fix It
-
Remove and firmly reinsert the microSD card
Power off the camera, remove the SD card from the slot at the side of the unit, and reinsert it firmly until it clicks. A card that was loose due to road vibration will re-establish contact and the error may clear on the next power-on.
-
Format the card via the Thinkware Dash Cam Link app
Open the Thinkware Dash Cam Link app on your phone and connect to the camera's Wi-Fi hotspot. Navigate to Settings > Memory Card > Format Memory Card. Confirm the format — all footage is erased. The app formats the card with the correct file system and folder structure for Thinkware recording.
-
Format the card on a Windows PC if the app format fails
Insert the card in a computer card reader. In Windows, right-click the drive and select Format. Choose exFAT for 64GB and larger cards, or FAT32 for 32GB cards. Uncheck Quick Format for a thorough format that clears bad sector flags. Click Start and wait for completion before reinserting.
-
Confirm the card meets Thinkware's speed and capacity requirements
Thinkware cameras require a Class 10 or UHS-I microSD card. Minimum recommended capacities are 32GB for standard recording and 128GB for 4K models. High-endurance cards (Samsung PRO Endurance, Lexar PLAY) are strongly recommended — standard camera cards fail within months in continuous-recording environments.
-
Replace the card if the error persists after formatting
If the SD Card Error returns within a short time after formatting, the card itself has failed due to write cycle exhaustion. Replace it with a fresh high-endurance microSD card of the correct specification. After inserting the new card, format it once through the app before first use.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the SD Card Error appear on a Thinkware camera?
Thinkware cameras announce the error via a voice notification — you will hear 'Please check the memory card' or 'Memory card error' through the camera's built-in speaker. The error is also visible in the Thinkware Dash Cam Link app. Some models show a status LED pattern — check your model's manual for the LED code.
Does Thinkware have an auto-format feature to prevent SD card corruption?
Yes — Thinkware cameras have an Auto-Format option in settings that automatically reformats the SD card on a scheduled interval (typically every 2 or 4 weeks). Enabling this setting helps prevent file system corruption caused by continuous looped recording and extends the working life of the card.
