Bucket Full / FL
GE Dehumidifier
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
GE Dehumidifier Bucket Full (shown as 'FL' on the display, or the Bucket Full indicator light) means the internal water collection container has reached its maximum level. The dehumidifier pauses automatically to prevent overflow. Remove and empty the bucket, reinsert it fully, and the unit will resume dehumidifying automatically.
Affected Models
- GE ADEL50LZ
- GE ADEL70LZ
- GE ADER65LZ
- GE ADEW65LZ
- GE APEL70LZ
Common Causes
- The bucket has filled with condensate during normal operation in a humid environment
- Continuous drain hose is not set up and the unit is relying on manual bucket emptying
- The drain hose is connected but kinked or blocked, preventing water from draining
- The float switch inside the bucket housing is stuck in the full position
How to Fix It
-
Pull the water collection bucket out from the front of the unit
Grip the bucket handle and slide it straight out. The bucket is typically located at the lower front. Handle carefully — a full bucket weighs approximately 2–3 kg. Carry it to a drain or sink without tilting excessively.
-
Empty the bucket fully and rinse it clean
Drain all water and rinse with clean water. Regularly cleaning the bucket with a mild bleach solution prevents mould and mildew from growing in the standing water area. Allow the bucket to drain completely before reinserting.
-
Reinsert the bucket fully until it clicks into place
Slide the bucket back in firmly. If the bucket is even slightly short of its fully inserted position, the float arm or switch inside the bucket housing will remain triggered and the dehumidifier will not restart. Push until the bucket is flush with the front of the unit.
-
The dehumidifier should restart automatically once the bucket is reseated
GE dehumidifiers detect the empty bucket via a float switch and resume operation automatically. If the unit does not restart, press the Power button. Confirm the FL indicator is no longer showing. If FL persists with an empty bucket, the float switch may be stuck — see below.
-
Free a stuck float switch if the unit will not restart despite an empty bucket
Reach into the bucket compartment with the power off and unplugged. Locate the float arm (a small buoyant arm that rises with water level). Gently push it down to confirm it moves freely and springs back up. A float stuck in the up position gives a false Bucket Full reading — clean any debris around the float pivot.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I set up continuous drainage on a GE dehumidifier?
GE dehumidifiers have a drain port on the rear (a small threaded or press-fit opening near the bottom). Connect a standard garden hose or a drain hose and route it continuously downhill to a floor drain or outdoor area. Once the hose is connected, the condensate drains by gravity and the bucket never fills. Verify the hose has no uphill sections.
The GE bucket fills very quickly — is this normal?
The rate of water collection depends on room humidity and the size of the space being dehumidified. In very humid conditions (above 70% RH) in a large basement, a 50-pint GE dehumidifier can fill its 0.75-gallon bucket in as little as 6–8 hours. This is normal operation — it means the unit is working efficiently. Set up continuous drainage to avoid manual emptying in high-humidity situations.
