LO
GE Dehumidifier
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
GE Dehumidifier LO code means the room temperature has dropped below the unit's minimum safe operating temperature of 41°F (5°C). Operating below this temperature causes frost to build up on the evaporator coil, blocking airflow and risking compressor damage. The unit pauses automatically until the temperature rises. No repair is needed — this is normal protective behaviour.
Affected Models
- GE ADEL50LZ
- GE ADEL70LZ
- GE ADER65LZ
- GE ADEW65LZ
- GE APEL70LZ
Common Causes
- Room temperature has dropped below 41°F (5°C) — the minimum rated operating temperature
- Cold air is entering the space from an open door, window, or uninsulated crawl space
- Seasonal temperature change has brought the room below the operating threshold
- The dehumidifier is being used in a garage or outbuilding that experiences freezing or near-freezing temperatures
How to Fix It
-
Verify the room temperature is the actual cause
LO is a self-diagnostic — check the room temperature with a basic thermometer. If the room is below 45°F (7°C), LO is correct and expected. The dehumidifier is protecting itself from coil icing and compressor strain.
-
Wait for the room to warm naturally before expecting the unit to restart
The GE dehumidifier will resume operation automatically once the temperature rises above the cut-in point (typically 45–50°F / 7–10°C). No buttons need to be pressed. If the room warms up, the unit restarts and continues its humidity level target.
-
Add a space heater to warm the area above the operating threshold
In cold basements and garages, a small space heater can raise the temperature above 50°F (10°C) quickly. Running the heater alongside the dehumidifier is a practical solution for year-round dehumidification in marginally cold spaces.
-
Seal air leaks to maintain temperature in the space
Cold infiltration from drafty windows, foundation cracks, or an uninsulated exterior wall can keep a basement perpetually cold. Weather-stripping, foam insulation, and door sweeps reduce cold air ingress and help maintain the temperature above the dehumidifier's operating threshold.
-
Switch to a desiccant dehumidifier for spaces below 41°F
If the room regularly falls below 41°F (5°C), a refrigerant-based dehumidifier like the GE ADEL series is not suitable. Desiccant dehumidifiers use a moisture-absorbing wheel instead of a refrigerant coil and operate reliably down to 33°F (1°C) or below, making them the correct choice for cold, damp spaces.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will the GE dehumidifier resume on its own when the room warms up?
Yes — the LO protection resets automatically. Once the temperature sensor reads above the cut-in threshold, the compressor restarts and the dehumidifier continues working toward its set humidity level without any manual action needed.
Can a GE dehumidifier damage itself if it accidentally runs in near-freezing conditions?
The LO cutout prevents the unit from running below its rated temperature, so the protection circuit should prevent coil icing and compressor damage in most cases. However, if the LO sensor malfunctions and the unit runs at very low temperatures, frost can build up on the coil and — if it melts and drips onto the compressor — cause damage over time.
