E15
KitchenAid Dishwasher
Severity: CriticalWhat it means
KitchenAid dishwasher E15 (also shown as E-15 on some panels) means the leak-detection system has tripped.
KitchenAid's official line is short and very clear: 'The E-15 Error Code could indicate a small leak from the dishwasher. Turn the water off to the Dishwasher and schedule service.'
There is no DIY reset path published — running the cycle again risks flooding the cabinet.
Affected Models
- KitchenAid KDPM, KDTM, KDTE, KDFE built-in dishwashers
- KitchenAid KDPE, KDPE804K, KDPE234G series
- KitchenAid PrintShield, Architect II, and panel-ready models
- KitchenAid KUDS legacy series (older models)
- Same codes appear on Whirlpool, Maytag, and JennAir dishwashers (shared platform)
Common Causes
- Slow drip from the door gasket onto the floor of the cabinet
- Tub or sump pinhole leak (most common on older units)
- Pump or motor seal weeping
- Loose drain hose clamp inside the door or behind the access panel
- Cracked spray arm or feed tube leaking under pressure
How to Fix It
-
Shut off the water supply now.
Under the sink, turn the dishwasher's shutoff valve clockwise until it stops.
This is KitchenAid's first instruction for E15 — they specifically don't want the machine to take on more water until the leak is found. -
Pull the dishwasher out an inch and look.
If you can safely pull the unit forward a couple of inches, look at the floor under the front edge with a flashlight.
Visible water means a leak you can confirm.
No visible water doesn't mean it's safe — the leak may be slow and sitting in the drip pan. -
Empty the drip pan if you can reach it.
Carefully tip the front of the dishwasher up an inch and sponge any water out of the pan beneath the tub.
Even if you do this, the underlying leak hasn't been fixed — E15 will return as soon as water touches the float again. -
Schedule service.
KitchenAid's only published next step is to schedule service.
The technician will pressure-test the supply, sump, pump seal, and door gasket to locate the leak.
Repairs are model-specific — gasket, sump, or pump seal — and shouldn't be DIY on a unit under warranty.
When to Call a Professional
E15 is the only KitchenAid dishwasher code where the manufacturer explicitly skips owner troubleshooting and goes straight to service.
Schedule a technician before running another cycle — running with a leak triggered means water in places it shouldn't be.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I keep using the dishwasher if I unplug the float switch to silence E15?
No — and the technician will know you did.
The float switch exists specifically to stop a slow leak from becoming a kitchen flood.
Disabling it doesn't fix the leak; it removes the only safeguard.
Shut the water off, leave the dishwasher alone, and wait for service.
