F1E1
KitchenAid Dishwasher
Severity: CriticalWhat it means
KitchenAid dishwasher F1E1 is a hard lockout.
KitchenAid's exact wording: 'Drain sequence will begin but then the dishwasher will not continue to operate once the F1E1 Error Code is displayed.'
The machine will pump out whatever water is in the tub and then sit unresponsive.
This is the protection logic responding to a control or sensor fault it judges unsafe to run through.
Affected Models
- KitchenAid KDPM, KDTM, KDTE, KDFE built-in dishwashers
- KitchenAid KDPE, KDPE804K, KDPE234G series
- KitchenAid PrintShield, Architect II, and panel-ready models
- KitchenAid KUDS legacy series (older models)
- Same codes appear on Whirlpool, Maytag, and JennAir dishwashers (shared platform)
Common Causes
- Control board (ACU) fault tripping leak protection
- Internal sensor reading the control rejected as out-of-range
- Leak detected during the cycle (often paired with F8E5 or E15 on later faults)
- Communication error between the user interface and the main control
- Failed relay on the electronic control board
How to Fix It
-
Shut off the water supply.
KitchenAid's first instruction: 'Shut off the water supply to the unit if feasible.'
The valve is under the sink — turn it clockwise until it stops.
This prevents any further water entry while the fault is unresolved. -
Disconnect power.
KitchenAid: 'Disconnect power from the dishwasher (unless water cannot be turned off — in that case, keep the door closed and leave power on).'
If you successfully shut off the water in step 1, pull the plug or trip the breaker.
If the supply valve is stuck, leave power on and door closed — the drain protection won't work without power. -
Silence the alarm.
Press the Cancel key once to stop the tone.
The display will still show F1E1 — that's expected and isn't cleared by Cancel. -
Schedule service.
F1E1 needs a technician with the diagnostic reader to identify which control or sensor tripped the lockout.
If the dishwasher is under warranty, going through KitchenAid's service portal protects the coverage.
Out of warranty, expect a control board replacement on most F1E1 calls.
When to Call a Professional
F1E1 is a service-side fault — KitchenAid does not publish DIY repair steps beyond shutting off water and power.
The only owner actions are to silence the alarm and prepare the unit safely for the technician.
Frequently Asked Questions
The dishwasher drained itself and then locked out — is water still safe to use in the kitchen?
Yes — F1E1 only affects the dishwasher itself.
The drain hose connects to the kitchen waste line through the disposer or air gap, and the drained water has already left the dishwasher through that normal path.
The kitchen sink, disposer, and tap are unaffected.
The only restriction is the dishwasher — leave it powered down with the water shutoff closed until service.
