F8E4

KitchenAid Dishwasher

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

KitchenAid dishwasher F8E4 error means the flood protection sensor has triggered — too much water or foam has been detected. Do not open the door. Cancel the cycle and wait for the machine to pump out the water.

Affected Models

  • KitchenAid Built-In Dishwasher
  • KitchenAid Top Control Dishwasher
  • KitchenAid Front Control Dishwasher
  • KitchenAid KDTM Series Dishwasher

Common Causes

  • Excess foam from using wrong detergent or too much detergent
  • Inlet valve stuck open — machine overfilling
  • Float switch in the base stuck in the up position
  • Leaking internal hose or door seal causing water build-up in the base
  • Suds from washing-up liquid used instead of dishwasher detergent

How to Fix It

  1. Cancel the cycle and let the machine pump out.

Press Cancel/Drain to pump out any excess water. Do not open the door while the machine is still draining — excess foam or water may spill out.

  2. Check for excess foam.

Look through the door window for excessive foam or bubbles. F8E4 is frequently triggered by using regular washing-up liquid, hand soap, or too much dishwasher detergent. Use only dishwasher-specific tablets or powder at the correct dose.

  3. Run a Rinse Only cycle.

After the foam clears, run a Rinse Only cycle with no detergent. This flushes excess soap from the machine and resets the sensors.

  4. Check the door seal for leaks.

Inspect the rubber door gasket for tears or sections that have pulled away from the frame. A leaking door seal allows water to pool in the base and trigger the flood sensor.

When to Call a Professional

If F8E4 appears repeatedly and is not caused by excess foam, the inlet valve or float switch has failed. A technician should inspect both.
