HE

LG Dishwasher

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

HE on an LG dishwasher means the heater isn't reaching expected temperature within the time the controller allows.
Either the heating element has burned out, the wiring is loose, or the temperature sensor is reading wrong.
Cycles still complete but without proper drying or sanitizing.
Service repair is the fix — 150–300 USD typically.

Affected Models

  • LG TrueSteam
  • LG QuadWash
  • LG LDF series
  • LG LDP series
  • LG smart dishwasher

Common Causes

  • Heating element burned out
  • Heater wiring loose at controller
  • Temperature sensor failed (false low reading triggers HE)
  • Heater relay on control board failed
  • Hard water mineral buildup on element

How to Fix It

  1. Run a quick rinse to test.

Power-cycle the dishwasher (unplug or breaker for 5 minutes), then run a Quick or Rinse cycle without heated dry.
If it completes without HE, the issue is specifically with heating.
If HE returns mid-rinse, sensor or wiring is the cause, not the element itself.

  2. Check water temperature mid-cycle.

Run a normal cycle and open the door briefly mid-cycle (watch for hot water splashing).
Feel the water — should be hot.
If cold, the element isn't heating.
If warm, the element works but maybe doesn't reach the controller's expected temp.

  3. Test the wall outlet.

If you have a multimeter, confirm the outlet provides full voltage.
Low voltage during heating cycles makes the element underperform.
An electrician check might be needed if other appliances on the same circuit also struggle.

  4. Don't disassemble the dishwasher.

The heating element is a tube at the bottom of the tub — replacing it requires removing the lower spray arm and possibly tipping the unit.
Working with electrical components inside a wet appliance is service-tech territory.

  5. Schedule LG service.

    Provide model and serial numbers.
Most LG-authorized centers can do heater replacement in one visit.
    Out-of-warranty repair runs 200–350 USD.
    Within LG warranty, free repair.
Have your purchase date ready when calling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep using the dishwasher with HE?

Yes — but expect dishes to come out wetter than usual.
Without working heat, the dishwasher can't dry properly.
Open the door at end of cycle to air-dry dishes.
Don't use Sanitize cycles — they don't work without heat and waste energy.
Fix it within a couple weeks for normal operation.

Why does the heater fail in hard water areas?

Mineral deposits coat the heater element over months and years.
The minerals insulate the element, forcing it to run hotter to transfer heat to water.
Eventually the element overheats internally and fails.
Annual descaling with dishwasher cleaner doubles or triples element life.
