nE

LG Dishwasher

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

nE is the wash motor speed fault — the motor isn't running at the speed the controller expects.
Either food debris is jamming the impeller, the motor is failing, or the controller can't read the motor's feedback signal.
Cancel the cycle, clean out the filter and sump area, then run a short rinse cycle.
If nE returns, the motor needs replacement.

Affected Models

  • LG TrueSteam
  • LG QuadWash
  • LG LDF series
  • LG LDP series
  • LG smart dishwasher

Common Causes

  • Food debris jamming the wash motor impeller
  • Hair, lint, or string wrapped around the impeller
  • Motor bearing seizing after years of use
  • Motor speed sensor failed
  • Controller's motor input damaged

How to Fix It

  1. Cancel the cycle and let water drain.

    Press Cancel/Drain.
The dishwasher will run the drain pump to empty the tub.
Wait for it to finish — about 2 minutes.
Now you can safely open the unit without water spilling out.

  2. Pull out the bottom rack and remove the filter.

The filter assembly sits at the bottom center.
Twist counterclockwise to remove the cylindrical filter.
You may need to remove a flat strainer plate underneath.
Set both aside on a towel.

  3. Inspect the sump for debris.

Look down into the sump — the bowl-shaped area beneath the filter.
You'll see the wash impeller (a small flat fan).
Look for hair, food chunks, broken glass, or anything obstructing the impeller.
Pick out any debris with tweezers.

  4. Spin the impeller by hand.

Carefully turn the impeller with your finger.
Should rotate freely with light resistance.
If it grinds, sticks, or won't move, the motor bearings are seized.
    That's a motor replacement situation.

  5. Reassemble and run a short cycle.

Reinstall the filter (twist clockwise to lock).
    Replace the bottom rack.
Run a Quick or Rinse cycle.
    Watch for nE to return.
If it doesn't, debris was the cause and you've fixed it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does food get past the filter?

Pre-rinsing helps but isn't perfect — small bits of corn, rice, or string slip past most filters.
Some end up in the sump where they jam the impeller.
Cleaning the sump area every few months prevents recurrence.

Is nE a sign of a failing motor?

Sometimes.
If cleaning out debris doesn't fix nE, the motor itself is degrading.
Replacement motors run 100–200 USD parts plus labor.
For dishwashers under 7 years, repair is cost-effective.
For older units, replacement of the whole dishwasher is often more economical.
