F9E1

Whirlpool Dishwasher

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

F9E1 means the drain pump can't move water out — either the drain hose is clogged, the filter is blocked, or the pump itself has failed.
Cancel the cycle and remove the bottom rack.
Pull out the cylindrical filter, look down into the sump for debris.
Check the drain hose under the sink for kinks.
Most F9E1 events clear with filter cleaning.

Affected Models

  • Whirlpool WDF series
  • Whirlpool WDT series
  • Whirlpool Quiet Partner
  • Whirlpool Gold dishwashers

Common Causes

  • Filter clogged with food debris
  • Drain hose kinked or clogged
  • Air gap (if installed) blocked
  • Drain pump impeller jammed by debris
  • Drain pump motor failed

How to Fix It

  1. Cancel the cycle and let it drain.

    Press Cancel/Drain on the touchpad.
The dishwasher tries to drain remaining water.
If F9E1 returns immediately, the drain is fully blocked.
You may need to manually scoop out standing water before opening fully.

  2. Remove the filter.

    Pull out the bottom rack.
Twist the cylindrical filter counterclockwise and lift out.
Underneath is a flat strainer plate — lift that too.
Look at both — likely clogged with food debris.
    Rinse them under the sink.

  3. Inspect the sump.

Look down into the sump area beneath the filters.
Pick out any debris with tweezers — bones, broken glass, hard pasta.
The drain pump impeller is at the bottom; debris jams the impeller.
Clearing debris is the most common fix for F9E1.

  4. Check the drain hose.

Trace the dishwasher's drain hose from the back to where it connects under the sink.
Look for kinks, sharp bends, or anything pressing on the hose.
If you have an air gap (small chrome cap on the sink), check that's not clogged.
Pull off and clean if needed.

  5. Schedule service if drain pump is failed.

If filter, sump, hose, and air gap are all clean but F9E1 persists, the drain pump itself has failed.
Replacement is 80–150 USD parts plus labor.
Service-tech work — accessing the pump requires partially dismantling the dishwasher.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I clean the dishwasher filter?

Every 1–3 months for most users.
Daily-use households should check monthly.
If you don't pre-rinse much, weekly is reasonable.
A clean filter is the single biggest factor in dishwasher performance and the easiest way to prevent F9E1.

Can I run the disposal at the same time as the dishwasher?

On most installs, no — they share a drain path.
Run the disposal before starting the dishwasher to clear any food in the line.
Running both simultaneously can cause backups that show as F9E1.
Don't worry about timing within a cycle though, just before.
