Gimbal Error

Autel Robotics Drone

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Autel EVO gimbal error means the camera stabilisation system is not responding correctly. Remove the gimbal protector, power cycle the drone, and run a gimbal calibration from the Autel Sky app.

Affected Models

  • Autel EVO Lite
  • Autel EVO Lite+
  • Autel EVO Nano+

Common Causes

  • Gimbal clamp or protector left on during flight
  • Gimbal knocked or dropped causing a mechanical jam
  • Gimbal calibration data corrupted by firmware update
  • Loose ribbon cable between the gimbal and aircraft body
  • Gimbal motor overloaded from a prop wash or tight mounting

How to Fix It

  1. Remove the gimbal protector/clamp before powering on.

The orange or red plastic gimbal guard must be removed before every flight. Leaving it on blocks gimbal movement and immediately triggers a gimbal error.

  2. Power cycle the drone completely.

Power off, wait 10 seconds, and power back on. The gimbal runs a self-test at startup. Many transient errors clear with a fresh power cycle.

  3. Run gimbal calibration in Autel Sky.

Go to Autel Sky → Settings → Gimbal Calibration. Place the drone on a flat surface and do not touch it during calibration. Calibration takes about 30 seconds.

  4. Check the gimbal ribbon cable connection.

If you recently crashed, the ribbon cable between the gimbal and the aircraft body may have come loose. Gently reseat the connector — consult the Autel repair guide or contact support if unsure.

  5. Contact Autel Robotics support if the error persists.

A gimbal motor or ribbon cable fault requires professional repair. Autel offers a repair program — visit autelrobotics.com/support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Autel EVO Nano gimbal replaceable?

Yes. Autel sells replacement gimbal units for the EVO Nano and Lite. Swapping the gimbal is a fairly simple procedure — detailed in the Autel repair documentation.

Why does my gimbal tilt to one side after a crash?

A crash can bend the gimbal arm or snap a motor wire. If power cycling and calibration do not fix the tilt, the gimbal has physical damage and needs replacement.
