Not Taking Off

Holy Stone Drone

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Holy Stone drones refuse to take off when the motors are locked by a safety check. The most common causes are compass calibration required, GPS not acquired, low battery, or the throttle not following the unlock sequence. Check the HS GO+ app for any active warnings.

Affected Models

  • Holy Stone HS720E
  • Holy Stone HS360E
  • Holy Stone F11S
  • Holy Stone HS175D
  • Holy Stone HS710E

Common Causes

  • Compass not calibrated after arriving at a new location
  • GPS signal not yet acquired — satellite count too low
  • Motors not unlocked using the correct stick combination
  • Battery below minimum takeoff level
  • Drone placed on uneven surface failing tilt check

How to Fix It

  1. Check the HS GO+ app for any warning banners.

Open HS GO+, connect to the drone, and look for any red or yellow warning messages at the top of the screen. The app tells you exactly why the drone is not arming.

  2. Calibrate the compass if prompted.

Compass calibration is required when flying in a new location. In HS GO+: Settings → Compass Calibration. Follow the on-screen instructions: rotate the drone horizontally, then vertically.

  3. Wait for GPS to acquire at least 6 satellites.

The satellite count is shown in the top bar of the HS GO+ app. Fly in an open area away from buildings. GPS acquisition usually takes 60-90 seconds.

  4. Use the correct motor unlock stick combination.

On most Holy Stone drones: push both sticks inward and down simultaneously (the V-shape position) to unlock the motors. Hold for 2 seconds until the motors begin spinning. Consult your model's manual for the exact unlock gesture.

  5. Place the drone on a flat, hard surface.

Holy Stone GPS drones check their tilt before arming. Launching from grass, gravel, or a slope can fail this check. Use a flat pavement or concrete surface.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Holy Stone drone motors beep but won't spin — what's wrong?

Beeping without spinning usually means the ESC is initialising or a safety lock is active. Make sure the throttle stick is at the lowest position before trying to unlock, and check for any app warnings.

Does the Holy Stone HS720E need GPS to fly?

No. GPS mode is the default but you can switch to Attitude (ATTI) mode in the HS GO+ app. In ATTI mode the drone will not hold position — it requires more active piloting.
