E16

Bosch Dryer

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

E16 means the dryer's drum motor has stopped or detected a fault. The dryer will not run without a working motor. Check for obstructions and let it cool before assuming the motor needs replacement.

Affected Models

  • Bosch Serie 2 Dryer
  • Bosch Serie 4 Dryer
  • Bosch Serie 6 Dryer
  • Bosch Serie 8 Dryer
  • Bosch Condenser Dryer

Common Causes

  • Motor overheating and shutting down via thermal protection
  • Broken or slipped drive belt leaving the drum stationary
  • Foreign object jammed between drum and housing
  • Worn motor bearings causing the motor to seize

How to Fix It

  1. Unplug the dryer and let it cool for 30 minutes.

The motor has a thermal overload protector that shuts it down if it overheats. Also clean the exhaust filter and duct while waiting — blocked airflow is a common cause of motor overheating.

  2. Check for drum obstructions.

Rotate the drum manually. If it feels stiff or gritty, look for a foreign object (coin, underwire, small item of clothing) caught between the drum and the front seal.

  3. Inspect the drive belt.

Access the belt from the back panel. A broken or slipped belt means the motor runs but the drum does not turn — the control board then detects the stall and triggers E16. A new belt is an inexpensive fix.

  4. Replace the motor if all else checks out.

If the drum rotates freely and the belt is intact, the motor itself has failed. This repair is best left to a Bosch-authorised technician due to the complexity of the reassembly.

When to Call a Professional

If there are no drum obstructions and the drive belt is intact, the motor has likely failed. Bosch motor replacements are complex — a Bosch-authorised technician is recommended.
