E17

Bosch Dryer

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

E17 means the heating element is not working correctly. The dryer will tumble but produce no heat. Start by cleaning the lint filter and exhaust duct, then test the thermal cutoff and heating element.

Affected Models

  • Bosch Serie 2 Dryer
  • Bosch Serie 4 Dryer
  • Bosch Serie 6 Dryer
  • Bosch Serie 8 Dryer

Common Causes

  • Failed heating element coil
  • Tripped thermal cutoff due to blocked airflow
  • Loose or damaged wiring to the element
  • Faulty NTC temperature sensor preventing the element from switching on

How to Fix It

  1. Clean the lint filter and exhaust vent.

Remove all lint from the filter and clear the full exhaust duct. Blocked airflow is the leading cause of thermal cutoff trips, which produce the same symptom as a failed element.

  2. Test the thermal cutoff fuse.

Locate the thermal cutoff near the heating element inside the back of the dryer. Test with a multimeter — no continuity means it has tripped. Replace it (do not just bypass it).

  3. Test and replace the heating element.

Test the element coil for continuity with a multimeter. No continuity means the coil is broken and the element assembly must be replaced. Use your Bosch model number to order the correct part.

When to Call a Professional

If the exhaust is clear and the thermal cutoff has been replaced but E17 persists, a Bosch technician should test the heating element and control board.
