E1

GE Dryer

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

E1 means the dryer's thermistor (temperature sensor) is faulty, disconnected, or reading incorrect values. The dryer shuts down to prevent overheating. Inspect the connector, then replace the sensor if needed.

Affected Models

  • GE Electric Dryer
  • GE Gas Dryer
  • GE GTD Series
  • GE Profile Dryer

Common Causes

  • Failed thermistor (temperature sensor)
  • Loose or disconnected sensor wire
  • Blocked exhaust vent causing sensor damage from overheating
  • Corroded sensor contacts

How to Fix It

  1. Clean the exhaust vent.

Disconnect the duct and clear all lint. Restricted airflow causes heat buildup that damages the thermistor over time.

  2. Inspect the thermistor wire connector.

Unplug the dryer and locate the thermistor — usually on the exhaust duct or near the heating element housing. Reseat the connector firmly. A loose connection reads the same as a failed sensor.

  3. Test the thermistor with a multimeter.

At room temperature a working thermistor reads in the range of several thousand ohms. If it reads open or zero ohms, the thermistor has failed — replace it with the part number for your specific GE model.

When to Call a Professional

If the vent is clear and the sensor tests faulty with a multimeter, this is a straightforward DIY part replacement. Call a technician if the error returns after replacing the thermistor.
