E2
GE Dryer
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
E2 means the exhaust thermistor is reading a temperature outside the normal range — usually because the vent is blocked and exhaust temperatures have spiked, or the sensor itself has failed.
Affected Models
- GE Electric Dryer
- GE Gas Dryer
- GE GTD Series
- GE Profile Dryer
Common Causes
- Clogged exhaust vent (most common cause)
- Failed exhaust thermistor reading too high or too low
- Lint buildup around the sensor body
- Kinked or crushed exhaust duct restricting airflow
How to Fix It
-
Clean the exhaust vent thoroughly.
Disconnect the duct from the back of the dryer and the wall outlet. Use a dryer vent brush to remove all lint along the full duct run. Check the outside vent cap is not blocked.
-
Remove lint from inside the cabinet.
Unplug the dryer and remove the back panel. Vacuum any lint accumulation around the blower housing and thermistor body.
-
Test the exhaust thermistor.
With the dryer unplugged, test thermistor resistance with a multimeter. If it reads open or zero, replace it. If the vent was the problem and the sensor tests within spec, cleaning alone should fix E2.
When to Call a Professional
If cleaning the vent clears E2 but it returns within a few cycles, the thermistor has been damaged by repeated overheating and should be replaced.
