D80

LG Dryer

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

LG dryer D80 means the exhaust vent is approximately 80% blocked and airflow is severely restricted. Clean the full length of the exhaust duct — from the dryer to the exterior vent cap — to resolve the warning.

Affected Models

  • LG Electric Dryer
  • LG Gas Dryer
  • LG DLGX Series
  • LG DLEX Series
  • LG ThinQ Dryer

Common Causes

  • Lint buildup inside the exhaust duct
  • Kinked or crushed flexible vent hose behind the dryer
  • Bird nest or debris blocking the exterior vent cap
  • Vent hose that is too long or has too many bends
  • Using a foil accordion vent hose instead of rigid metal duct

How to Fix It

  1. Clean the lint trap and housing.

Remove the lint screen and clean it thoroughly. Use a vacuum with a narrow attachment to clean lint out of the lint trap housing slot — buildup here reduces airflow before the vent duct even starts.

  2. Pull the dryer away from the wall and inspect the vent hose.

Check for kinks, crushes, or sharp bends in the flexible hose. Replace plastic accordion-style hoses with rigid or semi-rigid metal duct — accordion hoses trap lint and restrict airflow.

  3. Disconnect and clean the exhaust duct.

Use a dryer vent cleaning brush kit to clear lint from the full length of the duct run. Brush kits with flexible rods reach through long duct runs and are available at hardware stores for under $25.

  4. Clear the exterior vent cap.

Go outside and check the flap cover where the dryer vent exits the house. Remove any lint, leaves, bird nests, or debris blocking the flap from opening fully.

  5. Run a test cycle to confirm the warning is cleared.

After cleaning, run a full drying cycle. If D80 does not return and drying times improve, the blockage has been resolved. If D80 returns quickly, the duct has a hidden problem.

When to Call a Professional

If D80 returns immediately after cleaning the vent, the duct may have a hidden collapse or the vent run may be too long for the dryer to exhaust properly. A professional HVAC or appliance technician can assess the duct installation.
