IF
LG Dryer
Severity: MinorWhat it means
LG dryer IF is the lint-filter-not-assembled code.
LG dryers use a magnet on the lint filter to confirm it's fully seated — if the dryer can't detect the magnet, it shows IF and won't run.
This is a safety check: running without the lint filter sends lint straight into the exhaust system and creates a fire risk.
Affected Models
- LG DLE / DLG series electric and gas dryers
- LG DLEX / DLGX TurboSteam series with steam
- LG Signature and Studio series premium dryers
- LG DLHC series compact heat pump dryers
- LG WashTower combo units (shared dryer module)
Common Causes
- Lint filter not pushed fully home — magnet not lined up with sensor
- Lint filter inserted backwards or upside down
- Magnet missing from the filter (broken off or lost)
- Lint filter sensor in the dryer body damaged or coated with lint
- Wrong replacement lint filter (model without the magnet)
How to Fix It
-
Pull the lint filter out and reinsert firmly.
Pull the filter all the way out, brush off any visible lint, and reinsert with a firm push until it clicks into place.
A gentle push isn't enough — the magnet has to physically reach the sensor in the dryer body for the IF code to clear. -
Check filter orientation.
LG lint filters have a specific orientation — the tab usually faces one direction.
If you've removed the filter for cleaning and pushed it back the wrong way, IF will appear.
Look at the molded shape — it should sit flat inside the housing with the handle on top. -
Confirm the magnet is still attached.
Look at the bottom edge of the lint filter.
There should be a small round magnet embedded in the plastic frame.
If you can see a hole where the magnet should be, it's fallen off — order a replacement filter, the magnet isn't separately available. -
Wipe the sensor area.
With the filter out, look inside the filter housing with a flashlight.
The sensor is a small recess at the bottom of the housing where the magnet seats.
Wipe out any lint or dust with a damp cloth — built-up lint can dampen the magnetic field.
When to Call a Professional
Almost every IF clears in seconds with a firmer push of the lint filter.
If the filter is fully seated correctly and IF still shows, check that the small magnet on the filter is still in place — it's a small disc that can fall off if abused.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I run the dryer without the lint filter if I keep getting IF?
No — that's specifically what the IF code is designed to prevent.
Running an LG dryer without a properly-installed lint filter sends lint directly into the heat exchanger or vent system, creating a fire risk AND damaging the heat exchanger surfaces.
The IF safety interlock is required and not bypassable.
If your filter is damaged, order an LG replacement — it's an inexpensive accessory — before running the next cycle.
