lE1

LG Dryer

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

lE1 means the drum motor is locked — the controller commanded rotation, but the motor can't turn or its feedback signal isn't received.
Usually a clothing item is jammed between the drum and the body, or the drum belt has broken.
Open the dryer, remove anything stuck, and try to turn the drum by hand.
If it spins freely, restart.
If it won't turn, the belt or motor is the issue.

Affected Models

  • LG DLE series electric
  • LG DLG series gas
  • LG TurboSteam
  • LG SignaturePRO
  • LG smart dryer

Common Causes

  • Clothing jammed between the drum and the body
  • Drum drive belt broken or slipped off
  • Motor bearings seized
  • Motor encoder/feedback wire disconnected
  • Motor itself failed

How to Fix It

  1. Cancel the cycle and open the dryer.

    Press Power off.
    Unplug the dryer for safety.
Wait 5 minutes for residual heat to dissipate.
Open the door and look inside the drum.

  2. Look for jammed clothing.

Reach into the drum and feel around the gap between the drum and the front opening.
Sometimes a sock, glove, or small item gets pulled into this gap and jams the drum.
    Remove anything you find.
Check around the back of the drum too.

  3. Try to spin the drum by hand.

With power still off, reach in and try to rotate the drum.
Should turn smoothly with mild resistance.
If it spins freely, the belt is fine and the issue may be electrical.
If it won't turn at all, the belt is broken or the motor is seized.

  4. Listen for a humming sound.

If you restore power and try to start, listen carefully.
Does the motor hum but not rotate the drum?
That's a broken belt — the motor runs but isn't connected to the drum.
If you hear nothing and the dryer is silent, the motor isn't getting power.

  5. Schedule LG service.

Most lE1 fixes are belt replacement (belt itself 15–30 USD, total repair 150–250 USD with labor).
Motor replacement is more expensive (300–500 USD).
The technician determines which during diagnostic.
Don't try to access the belt yourself — requires removing the top, front, and drum.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the belt break?

Drum belts wear over years of operation — typically 5–10 years before failure.
Heavy loads, dryer running hot, or thermal stress all shorten belt life.
If your dryer is past 7 years and lE1 appears suddenly, belt failure is the likely cause.
Replacement is a routine repair.

Will lE1 damage anything if I keep trying?

Yes — repeatedly trying to start with a locked motor can burn out the motor windings or damage the controller's motor driver.
One reset attempt is fine.
If lE1 persists, leave the dryer alone with the door open and call for service.
Saving the motor is worth the wait.
