tE

LG Dryer

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

tE on an LG dryer means the thermistor (temperature sensor) is shorted, open, or out of range. The dryer cannot safely regulate heat and shuts down. Power off for 10 minutes. If tE returns, book service for thermistor replacement.

Affected Models

  • LG DLEX7800VE
  • LG DLE7300WE
  • LG DLG7401WE
  • LG DLEX9000V
  • LG DLG3501W

Common Causes

  • Failed thermistor (NTC temperature sensor)
  • Loose thermistor harness connector after vibration
  • Damaged sensor wiring (pinched against the dryer cabinet)
  • Severe overheating event from a blocked vent damaging the sensor

How to Fix It

  1. Power off and unplug for 10 minutes.

Switch off and unplug. After 10 minutes, restore power and try a short timed dry. Some tE events are transient and clear with a power cycle.

  2. Clean the dryer vent thoroughly.

The leading cause of repeated tE is an overheated heating system from poor venting. Inspect the dryer vent from the dryer to the outside. Clean lint, animal nests, and bird's nests from the outside vent termination.

  3. Verify with a no-heat cycle.

Select Air Dry or Air Fluff (no heat). If this cycle completes normally, the motor is fine and tE is isolated to the heating sensor.

  4. Book LG service for thermistor replacement.

An LG dryer thermistor costs USD 25–60 for the part. Labour adds USD 100–180. Total cost USD 150–250 fitted. The technician will also confirm the vent is clear before reassembly.

When to Call a Professional

tE requires opening the dryer to access the thermistor — the sensor is in the heater duct. Book LG-authorised service for the test and replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my LG dryer tumble without tE clearing?

The drum may tumble on Air Dry cycles (no heat). Heat cycles (regular drying, sanitise, etc) are blocked until tE clears. Air-only drying is much slower and not effective for normal laundry — treat tE as needing prompt repair.

Why do LG dryers commonly get tE after a few years?

tE is more common on LG dryers in homes with long, restrictive vent runs — multiple bends or long horizontal runs cause heat to accumulate in the heating duct, which over years degrades the thermistor. Routine vent cleaning extends sensor life.
