HC
Samsung Dryer
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
HC is the heater overheat code — internal temperature climbed past safe limits because airflow is restricted.
Almost always this is lint or a clogged dryer vent: lint trap not cleaned, exhaust hose clogged, or roof/wall vent blocked.
Pull the lint trap, clean it, vacuum the slot beneath, and check the exhaust hose for blockage.
HC is a fire-prevention safety — fix it the same day.
Affected Models
- Samsung DV45
- Samsung DV56
- Samsung DV90
- Samsung DVE series
- Samsung DVG series
Common Causes
- Lint trap full or clogged with fabric softener residue
- Exhaust hose blocked with lint
- Outside vent termination clogged
- Heater thermostat or thermal cutoff failed
- Internal blower fan failing — reduced airflow
How to Fix It
-
Cancel the cycle and let the dryer cool.
Press Power off.
Open the door and let everything cool — 30 minutes minimum.
Don't try to restart while still hot.
HC may not clear immediately even after cooling — that's normal. -
Pull and clean the lint trap.
Remove the lint trap fully.
Pull off the lint and discard.
If you use fabric softener sheets, the trap may have a waxy buildup — wash with warm soapy water and an old toothbrush.
Dry completely before reinstalling. -
Vacuum the lint trap slot.
Use a vacuum with a narrow attachment.
Insert it into the lint trap slot.
Vacuum out any fluff that's accumulated below the trap level.
This is what most users miss — the slot itself collects lint over time and reduces airflow. -
Inspect the exhaust hose.
Pull the dryer forward enough to access the back.
Disconnect the exhaust hose at the dryer.
Look inside — heavy lint accumulation indicates years without cleaning.
Vacuum or shake out the hose.
Replace if it's the white plastic flex type — those are fire hazards. -
Check the outside vent.
Find where the dryer vents outside (wall or roof).
Look at the vent flap — should open when the dryer runs and close when off.
Clean any lint accumulated on or around it.
Birds sometimes build nests in dryer vents — check for that too.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does HC happen even after I cleaned the lint trap?
The lint trap catches only some lint — the rest accumulates in the hose and outside vent.
If you've never had the full vent run cleaned, that's likely your HC source.
Annual professional cleaning (50–100 USD service) prevents most HC issues and is also a fire safety practice.
Is HC a fire risk?
Lint buildup is the leading cause of dryer fires.
HC is the dryer's protection working — heat got too high because airflow was blocked, and the safety shut things down before fire.
Don't ignore HC.
Don't bypass the thermal cutoffs.
The protection is keeping your house safe.
