HC4

Samsung Dryer

Severity: Critical

What it means

Samsung dryer HC4 is the overheating code.
Samsung's exact wording: 'This means that the dryer is getting too hot.'
Samsung adds a useful note: 'In some cases, the error can occur when the heater is not hot enough, which can be caused by low voltage.'
So HC4 covers both ends — too hot AND not hot enough due to a voltage drop.

Affected Models

  • Samsung DVE45 / DVE50 / DVE52 series electric dryers
  • Samsung DVG45 / DVG50 / DVG52 series gas dryers
  • Samsung DV9000T / DV9100T Smart Dial series
  • Samsung BESPOKE AI laundry dryers
  • Samsung FlexDry and WashTower units (shared dryer module)

Common Causes

  • Lint screen heavily clogged — heat trapped in the drum
  • Exhaust vent blocked or pinched — heat can't escape
  • Outdoor vent termination clogged or stuck closed
  • Low household voltage (heater can't reach correct temperature)
  • Heating element shorted or grounding intermittently (service)

How to Fix It

  1. Stop the cycle.

If HC4 appears mid-cycle, let the dryer cool down for 30 minutes before opening the door.
Don't try to immediately restart — overheating events stress the heating element and the high-limit thermostat.

  2. Clean the lint screen.

Pull the lint screen and clear all visible lint.
Hold it up to a light — if you can't see clearly through it, dryer sheet residue is blocking airflow.
Rinse under warm water and let it dry fully before reinstalling.

  3. Clean the full exhaust vent.

Disconnect the flex duct from the back of the dryer, vacuum the dryer's port and the duct, and check the outdoor wall vent flap opens freely.
If your exhaust run is over 25 feet or has multiple 90° bends, hire a professional vent cleaner — household vacuums don't reach the buildup.

  4. Run the Vent Blockage test.

Samsung's exact procedure if your model supports it: 'Press POWER to turn the dryer on and within 5 seconds, press and hold Adjust Time Up + Dry Level until InS or In appears. Press and hold START/PAUSE.'
A C80 or C90 result confirms a major blockage you need to address.

  5. Check household voltage.

Samsung specifically calls out low voltage as a possible HC4 cause.
If your dryer is on a shared circuit with an electric oven or large AC unit, that combination can drop voltage when both run at once.
An electrician can confirm with a voltage logger.

  6. Schedule service if HC4 returns.

If the lint screen, exhaust vent, and outdoor termination are all confirmed clear AND household voltage is good, the heating element or its safety thermostat needs Samsung service.
Don't keep running the dryer with HC4 — overheating events damage components and create fire risk.

When to Call a Professional

HC4 is a fire-risk-adjacent code.
Stop running the dryer if HC4 appears repeatedly — clean the lint screen and the full vent run before the next cycle.
If both are clean and HC4 returns, schedule service immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Samsung say HC4 can mean 'not hot enough' as well as 'too hot'?

Because the dryer's control logs an error whenever the heater can't reach the temperature it requested within the time it expected.
If the lint and vent are clogged, the air gets too hot and the safety thermostat trips.
If the household voltage is low, the heater can't generate enough heat and the air never reaches target — both look like 'temperature out of range' to the control and both log HC4.
That's why Samsung covers both in the same code.
