OD
Samsung Dryer
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
OD means the moisture sensor inside the drum detected the load as drier than the target — the cycle ended early.
Most often this is normal: the load was already pretty dry, or the sensor read it as drier than reality due to fabric type or load size.
If clothes are still wet but OD ended the cycle, the moisture sensor is dirty.
Wipe the sensor strips and try again.
Affected Models
- Samsung DV45
- Samsung DV56
- Samsung DV90
- Samsung DVE series
- Samsung DVG series
Common Causes
- Load was actually drier than expected
- Moisture sensor strips coated with fabric softener residue
- Very small load not contacting the sensor
- Moisture sensor failed
- Cycle setting wasn't appropriate for load type
How to Fix It
-
Check whether clothes are actually wet.
Open the dryer and feel the clothes.
If they're dry, OD was correct — no problem.
If they're still damp, the sensor is reading wrong and you need to fix it.
The fix path depends on this answer. -
Find and clean the moisture sensor.
Inside the drum (front or back depending on model), look for two thin metal strips, usually parallel and a couple inches long.
Those are the moisture sensor.
Wipe them with a soft cloth and a little rubbing alcohol.
Fabric softener residue insulates them and causes false 'dry' readings. -
Try a different cycle setting.
If you used Auto or Sensor Dry and got OD with wet clothes, switch to Timed Dry for that load.
Timed Dry runs for the time you set regardless of moisture sensor readings.
Use it for loads the sensor doesn't read accurately (rugs, large items, very small loads). -
Reduce fabric softener use.
Liquid fabric softener and dryer sheets leave residue that coats the moisture sensor over time.
Cut your softener use in half (or stop entirely) for a few weeks and see if OD reduces.
Wool dryer balls are an alternative that doesn't leave residue. -
Schedule service if sensor cleaning doesn't help.
If the sensor is clean and OD continues with wet loads, the sensor itself or its wiring has failed.
Replacement is 30–80 USD parts plus an hour of labor.
Service-tech repair — accessing the sensor requires partially disassembling the drum.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is OD different from a complete cycle?
OD specifically appears when sensor dry ends earlier than expected — the dryer is telling you the cycle ended sooner than you'd anticipate.
If the load is dry, that's just efficient drying.
If wet, the sensor failed and OD is alerting you.
The same code, different meaning depending on whether clothes are wet.
Why does OD happen with small loads?
Tiny loads (a single shirt or a couple of socks) don't make consistent contact with the moisture sensor strips.
The sensor reads air, which is drier than fabric, and ends the cycle early.
For very small loads, use Timed Dry instead of Sensor Dry.
