F24

Whirlpool Dryer

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

F24 means the inlet thermistor circuit is open — the wire is broken or the sensor itself has failed.
The dryer can't safely heat without the inlet sensor working.
Power-cycle once.
If F24 persists, the sensor needs replacement.
Service-tech repair: 100–200 USD typical.

Affected Models

  • Whirlpool Cabrio dryer
  • Whirlpool Duet dryer
  • Whirlpool front-load dryer
  • Whirlpool top-load dryer

Common Causes

  • Inlet thermistor failed (broken thermistor)
  • Sensor wire broken at a flex point
  • Connector disconnected from the controller
  • Wire chewed by rodents
  • Controller sensor input damaged

How to Fix It

  1. Power-cycle the dryer.

    Unplug for 10 minutes.
    Plug back in.
Wait for the display to fully boot.
Try a no-heat cycle (Cool Air or Air Fluff).
If F24 still appears even on no-heat cycles, the controller can't read the sensor at all.
If F24 only appears on heated cycles, the sensor reading is partially functional.

  2. Check for visible wire damage.

Pull the dryer forward and look at the back.
Where the cabinet wires exit, look for any obvious chew marks or insulation damage.
Rodents sometimes chew dryer wiring (especially in basements or garages).
Note any damage for the technician.

  3. Clean the lint trap and exhaust.

Even though F24 is sensor-related, restricted airflow stresses the heating system and makes sensor readings less reliable.
Clean the lint trap and check the exhaust hose.
This is preparation work — do it before service for best diagnostic results.

  4. Don't disassemble the dryer yourself.

The inlet thermistor is mounted near the heating element at the back of the drum.
Replacement requires removing the back panel and possibly the drum.
Service-tech work — DIY risks damaging gaskets or making the wiring worse.

  5. Schedule Whirlpool service.

    Provide model and serial numbers.
Most Whirlpool-authorized centers replace inlet thermistors in one visit.
    Out-of-warranty repair: 150–250 USD all-in.
    Free under warranty.
Worth doing — heating doesn't work safely without this sensor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I run no-heat cycles with F24?

Sometimes, depending on which model — some Whirlpool dryers will run no-heat cycles even with F24, others won't.
If yours allows it, use Air Fluff for delicates or air-drying needs.
Heated cycles need the repair done first.
Don't use the dryer for normal loads until F24 is fixed.

What's the difference between F22, F23, F24, F25?

All four are temperature sensor codes but different sensor and different fault type.
F22: outlet thermistor shorted.
F23: inlet thermistor shorted.
F24: inlet thermistor open.
F25: outlet thermistor open.
The fix path is similar (sensor replacement) but the technician uses the code to know which sensor to test first.
