F26
Whirlpool Dryer
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Whirlpool dryer F26 error means the motor or motor drive system has failed. The dryer cannot spin the drum — a reset sometimes clears a temporary motor fault, but a failed motor requires replacement.
Affected Models
- Whirlpool Electric Dryer
- Whirlpool Gas Dryer
- Whirlpool Cabrio Dryer
- Whirlpool WED Series
Common Causes
- Failed drive motor
- Motor thermal overload protector tripped from overheating
- Worn motor start winding
- Seized drum rollers overloading the motor
- Wiring fault between control board and motor
How to Fix It
-
Perform a power reset and let the motor cool.
Unplug the dryer and wait 30 minutes. If the motor has an internal thermal overload protector, it may have tripped from overheating. Allowing it to cool completely sometimes lets it reset.
-
Check for a drum obstruction.
Open the dryer door and try to turn the drum by hand. If the drum will not move or is very stiff, a foreign object or seized drum roller is overloading the motor. Remove the obstruction before testing the motor.
-
Test the motor windings with a multimeter.
Access the motor (rear panel on most Whirlpool models) and test each winding for continuity. An open winding confirms the motor has burned out and needs replacing.
-
Inspect the drum support rollers.
Seized or heavily worn drum rollers create excessive drag on the drum, overloading the motor. Replace all drum rollers as a set if any show flat spots, cracks, or stiffness.
When to Call a Professional
Motor replacement is a significant disassembly job on most Whirlpool dryers. Unless you are experienced with appliance repair, this is best left to a technician.
