F30
Whirlpool Dryer
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
F30 on a Whirlpool dryer means the moisture sensor strips inside the drum cannot read clothes' moisture — typically due to dryer sheet residue or fabric softener build-up. Clean the sensor strips with a soft cloth and rubbing alcohol — F30 usually clears.
Affected Models
- Whirlpool WED5000DW
- Whirlpool WED7500GW
- Whirlpool WGD8127LC
- Whirlpool WED75HEFW
- Whirlpool WGD9620HC
Common Causes
- Dryer sheet residue coating the moisture sensor strips inside the drum
- Fabric softener build-up insulating the sensor strips
- Loose sensor harness connector behind the rear panel
- Failed moisture sensor strips (rare — usually after years of use)
How to Fix It
-
Open the dryer door and locate the sensor strips.
Look inside the drum at the lint screen housing or just above it — the moisture sensor is two thin metal strips, about 5–8 cm long, typically at the front of the drum near the door opening. Refer to your manual for the exact location.
-
Clean the sensor strips.
Dampen a soft cloth with rubbing alcohol (isopropyl) and wipe each strip thoroughly. Dryer sheet residue and softener build-up form an insulating film that prevents the sensor from reading moisture accurately. Clean until the metal looks shiny.
-
Stop using dryer sheets temporarily.
Dryer sheets are the leading cause of F30. While diagnosing, run cycles without dryer sheets. If F30 stops appearing, switch to wool dryer balls (no residue) or use less softener.
-
Run a sensor-cycle test load.
Place a small load of damp towels in the drum. Select an Auto Sense (sensor) cycle. Watch the cycle — it should detect moisture and adjust drying time. If F30 returns, the sensor strips themselves may be failing.
-
Book service if F30 persists after cleaning.
If F30 returns after thorough cleaning, the sensor strips or their wiring needs inspection. A technician can test sensor resistance and replace if needed. Cost is typically USD 150–250 fitted.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will my Whirlpool dryer still work with F30?
Yes — F30 only affects auto-sense cycles. Time-based cycles (Timed Dry, 30 min Dry) work normally because they do not need the moisture sensor. Use timed cycles as a workaround until F30 is fixed.
Can fabric softener residue really cause F30?
Yes — and it is the most common cause. Fabric softener and dryer sheets leave a thin insulating film on the metal strips. Even one cycle of heavy softener use can cause F30. Cleaning every few months prevents recurrence.
