L2
Whirlpool Dryer
Severity: ModerateWhat it means
Whirlpool dryer L2 is the low-line-voltage code on older Whirlpool dryers.
Whirlpool's exact wording: 'An L2 (Low or No Line Voltage) Error code indicates that there may be a problem with your home power supply, keeping the dryer's heater from turning on.'
Importantly, Whirlpool adds: 'The dryer will continue to run when this error code is present.'
So the drum spins but the clothes don't get hot.
Affected Models
- Whirlpool WED4815 / WED4850 / WED5000 series electric dryers
- Whirlpool WED7120 / WED8120 / WED9620 Cabrio series
- Whirlpool WGD4815 / WGD5000 / WGD7120 series gas dryers
- Whirlpool Compact Heat Pump dryers (WHD862, WHD560)
- Same F+E codes appear on Maytag, KitchenAid, and Amana dryers (shared platform)
Common Causes
- One of the two 30-amp breakers tripped (electric dryers need both)
- Power cord installed with loose terminal screws at the dryer
- Home supply not actually 240V (only 120V available)
- Voltage drop from a long power run or undersized house wiring
- Plug not fully seated in a 4-prong dryer outlet
How to Fix It
-
Check both circuit breakers.
Whirlpool: 'Electric dryers need a separate 30-amp circuit with 2 breakers (one for the motor, one for heating). Verify neither is tripped.'
At the breaker panel, look for the dryer's double-pole 30A breaker.
If one side is tripped (between OFF and ON), flip it fully OFF, then back ON. -
Verify the 240V supply.
Whirlpool: 'Electric dryers require a 240-volt power supply. If you do not have 240-volt, your electric dryer will not operate correctly.'
An electric dryer plugged into a 120V outlet (via adapter or temporary wiring) will trigger L2 because the heater can't work on 120V. -
Inspect the power cord and terminal block.
Whirlpool: confirm 'terminal screws are tight at the dryer.'
Pull the dryer's back panel cover and check the three or four wire terminals where the power cord attaches.
Loose terminal screws cause voltage drop under load and trigger L2.
Switch off the breaker first. -
Power cycle the dryer.
Whirlpool: 'Turn off both circuit breakers for one minute, then turn them back on and run a time-dry cycle.'
This clears the logged L2 from the control's memory after you've addressed the supply. -
Clear the code from the display.
Whirlpool: 'Touch any pad to clear the code from the display and return to the estimated time remaining.'
The L2 indicator goes away but the underlying power issue stays — you need to address the supply for the heater to work normally.
When to Call a Professional
L2 is a power-supply issue first, not a dryer fault.
Schedule a qualified electrician (not Whirlpool service) if circuit breakers and the power cord are confirmed good and L2 still appears — the house wiring or supply needs checking.
Frequently Asked Questions
If the dryer is still running, do I need to fix L2 immediately?
The drum spins, but the clothes won't actually dry — only tumble.
Running the dryer at L2 means cycle after cycle of damp clothes coming out, which is annoying but not damaging.
However, the underlying cause (tripped breaker, loose terminal, or low household voltage) often signals an electrical issue worth fixing soon.
If two breakers tripped at once, that's worth investigating before something more serious happens.
