Unable to join
Rakuten Kobo eReader
Severity: ModerateWhat it means
Kobo 'unable to join [network name] please try again' is the Wi-Fi connection error documented on help.kobo.com.
It means the Kobo eReader saw your Wi-Fi network in the list but couldn't actually join it after you tapped on it.
The two biggest causes are a 5GHz-only network (Kobo eReaders are 2.4GHz on most models) and a wrong password — both are quick to fix.
Affected Models
- Kobo Clara HD, Kobo Clara 2E, Kobo Clara BW, Kobo Clara Colour
- Kobo Libra 2, Kobo Libra Colour
- Kobo Sage
- Kobo Elipsa, Kobo Elipsa 2E
- Kobo Aura H2O, Kobo Aura ONE (older models)
- Most Kobo eReaders support only 2.4GHz Wi-Fi (a few newer models added 5GHz)
Common Causes
- Wi-Fi network is broadcasting only on 5GHz — most Kobo eReaders are 2.4GHz only
- Wi-Fi password typed wrong (the input doesn't show what was typed for security)
- Router has WPA3 security set and the Kobo model doesn't support WPA3 yet
- Wi-Fi signal too weak at the reading location
- Router has MAC address filtering on and the Kobo's MAC isn't whitelisted
How to Fix It
-
Forget the network and re-add it.
On the Kobo: Home > More > Settings > Wi-Fi connection > tap your network > Forget.
Then tap the network name again, enter the password carefully (the Kobo masks each character — it's easy to mistype), and tap Connect.
A fresh join clears most stale-credential issues. -
Confirm the network is 2.4GHz.
On your router admin page, check whether your Wi-Fi has a 2.4GHz band and a 5GHz band, or only 5GHz.
Most Kobo eReaders only see and connect to 2.4GHz networks — a 5GHz-only network simply won't appear or will refuse to connect.
If your router uses 'band steering' (same name on both bands), temporarily separate them into two SSIDs (e.g., MyWiFi-2.4 and MyWiFi-5) so the Kobo can definitely pick the 2.4GHz one. -
Check the password by typing it on a phone first.
Connect to the same Wi-Fi network on a phone or computer using the exact password you'll type on the Kobo.
If the phone joins, the password is correct.
If the phone also fails, the password you have isn't right — get the current password from your router admin or the sticker on the router itself. -
Move closer to the router.
A weak signal that's borderline can make the network appear in the Kobo's list but fail to join.
Bring the Kobo into the same room as the router for setup.
Once joined, the Kobo holds the connection at greater distance even if the initial join needed close range. -
Change router security to WPA2.
Some new routers default to WPA3-only.
Older and even mid-generation Kobo eReaders only support WPA2.
If your router has a mode setting like 'WPA3-Personal' or 'WPA3 only', change it to 'WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode' or 'WPA2-Personal' and retry the Kobo join.
Devices on WPA3-supporting hardware keep working. -
Reboot the Kobo and the router.
Power-cycle both.
Hold the Kobo power button for 10 seconds to fully shut down, wait 30 seconds, power on.
Unplug the router for 30 seconds, plug back in, wait 2 minutes for it to fully boot.
Then retry the Wi-Fi join.
When to Call a Professional
Kobo Wi-Fi errors don't need service.
If forgetting the network, re-entering the password, and confirming 2.4GHz availability all fail, the router settings are the issue and your router admin needs to adjust — most often by enabling a 2.4GHz band with WPA2 (not WPA3-only).
Frequently Asked Questions
Can my Kobo connect to a phone hotspot if my home Wi-Fi won't work?
Yes — a phone hotspot is a useful way to confirm whether the issue is with your home network or the Kobo itself.
On the phone, set up a 2.4GHz hotspot (on iPhone: Settings > Personal Hotspot > Maximize Compatibility on; on Android: Hotspot settings > AP band 2.4GHz).
Join the Kobo to the hotspot.
If the Kobo joins the hotspot cleanly, your home router setting is the cause of 'unable to join' — most often a 5GHz-only or WPA3-only configuration.
If the Kobo can't join the hotspot either, the Kobo's Wi-Fi hardware itself is suspect.
