What Does This Error Mean?

Kobo shows 'Unable to sync' when the e-reader could not contact the Kobo servers to download new books, sync reading progress, or update its library.
The reading itself keeps working — only sync and store features are blocked.
Cause is almost always WiFi: weak signal, captive portal at a hotel, or Kobo's servers being briefly unreachable.

How to Fix It

  1. Confirm WiFi is on.

    Settings → Connection.
    WiFi should show as connected with a network name and signal bars.
    If WiFi is off, switch on and rejoin your network.
    If signal bars are low, move closer to the router.

  2. Open the browser to test.

    Settings → Browse the web (Beta) on most Kobos.
    Try to load any normal web page.
    If a hotel or guest login page appears, accept the terms.
    If pages do not load at all, the WiFi is connected but has no internet.

  3. Forget and rejoin the network.

    Settings → Connection → Forget the network.
    Then rejoin from scratch and re-enter the password.
    This resolves most cases where the WiFi password changed and the old credentials no longer work.

  4. Check the date and time.

    Settings → Date and Time.
    If it is years off, TLS connections to Kobo servers fail with cryptic sync errors.
    Set the correct date and time, sync should resume.

  5. Sign out and back in.

    Settings → Accounts → Sign Out.
    Sign back in with your Kobo account email and password.
    This refreshes the auth token.
    Many sync errors clear here.

  6. Restart the Kobo.

    Hold the power button until the device powers off.
    Wait 30 seconds.
    Power back on.
    Tap Sync from the home screen.
    Fresh boot resolves transient network state.

  7. Wait if it is a server outage.

    If multiple Kobo users in your area are reporting the same error, Kobo's servers may be down.
    Check the Kobo status page or community forum.
    The error clears on its own once service is restored.
