Battery Draining Fast
Barnes & Noble Nook
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
A Nook battery that drains quickly is almost always caused by Wi-Fi staying on when not needed and screen brightness set too high. Turn Wi-Fi off in Settings when not downloading books. Lower screen brightness to below 50% — E-ink screens use most power at high brightness.
Affected Models
- Nook GlowLight 4
- Nook GlowLight 4e
- Nook GlowLight Plus
- Nook GlowLight 3
- All Nook models
Common Causes
- Wi-Fi radio on continuously searching for networks
- Screen brightness set to maximum
- Background sync downloading new content
- Old battery that no longer holds a full charge
- Firmware bug causing excessive background activity
How to Fix It
-
Turn Wi-Fi off when not downloading books.
Swipe down from the top → tap Settings → Wi-Fi and disable it. Nook E-ink screens do not need Wi-Fi to display a book you have already downloaded.
-
Lower screen brightness.
Go to Settings → Display → Brightness. For comfortable indoor reading, 20–35% is adequate and significantly extends battery life.
-
Disable Auto-sync or set it to manual.
Settings → Account → Sync Settings → turn off automatic sync. This stops the Nook from checking for new purchases in the background.
-
Put the Nook to sleep between reading sessions.
Press the power button once to sleep. The Nook sleep screen uses near-zero power on E-ink — this is safe for long periods.
-
Update the Nook firmware.
Settings → Device Info → Software Updates → Check for Updates. Battery drain bugs have been fixed in firmware updates.
When to Call a Professional
If the Nook only lasts 2–3 hours on a full charge despite all settings optimized, the battery may need replacement. Contact Barnes & Noble support.
