E5

ClassicFlame Electric Fireplace

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

E5 on ClassicFlame is overheat shutdown — internal temperature exceeded the safety limit.
The unit disables heating to prevent fire risk.
Power off, let cool 30 minutes, check vents for obstructions, vacuum grilles.
Most causes: blocked vents (furniture, curtains), failed fan, or running max heat in small space.
Don't bypass — the protection prevents a real fire hazard.

Affected Models

  • ClassicFlame 26II042FGL
  • ClassicFlame Builders Box
  • ClassicFlame Mantel series

Common Causes

  • Vents blocked by curtains, furniture, or decorations
  • Fan motor failed (heat won't distribute)
  • Internal dust restricting airflow
  • Heater run on max in small enclosed space
  • Temperature sensor reading falsely high

How to Fix It

  1. Power off and let cool.

Turn off the unit at the wall switch.
Wait at least 30 minutes for full cooling.
The safety needs the temperature to drop before resetting.
    Don't try to restart immediately.

  2. Check all vents.

Look at every grille — front, top, sides, back.
Make sure nothing is blocking — drapes, decorations, books, anything.
Maintain 3+ feet clearance in front of the unit.
This is the most common E5 cause.

  3. Vacuum exterior grilles thoroughly.

Use vacuum with brush attachment on all grilles.
Pay special attention to air intake areas (where cool air enters).
Dust accumulation restricts airflow and causes overheat.
Annual cleaning prevents most E5 events.

  4. Verify the fan operates.

    Power back on after cooling.
    Briefly engage heater.
    Listen for the fan.
Silent fan = E5 was caused by no air movement.
Working fan but recurring E5 = blocked vents or sensor issue.

  5. Reduce heat setting.

Switch to lower heat level if available.
'High' heat in a small room with marginal ventilation is a recipe for E5.
Lower heat reduces overheat risk significantly.
Use high only when you have good airflow and a larger room.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is E5 a fire hazard?

The safety has triggered specifically to prevent fire.
The protection is working correctly.
If you bypass and run anyway, you risk fire if conditions worsen.
Don't override.
Fix the underlying cause (clear vents, repair fan) before resuming use.

Why does E5 happen with the cover/screen on?

Decorative screens and covers can trap heat against the unit.
If your unit has a glass front or decorative grille added on top, that may restrict airflow.
Try operating without the cover/screen to see if E5 stops.
If yes, the cover is the cause — choose ones that don't impede airflow.
