Error 08

Various Electric Bike

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

E-bike Error 08 typically means the controller has detected a hall sensor fault in the motor — the sensors that tell the controller the motor's rotor position. On some brands Error 08 indicates a throttle signal fault. The motor will not run until the fault is cleared.

Affected Models

  • Generic 36V/48V hub motor e-bikes
  • Bafang mid-drive kits
  • KT and Lishui controller systems
  • Many Chinese-manufactured budget e-bikes

Common Causes

  • Hall sensor wire connector loose or unplugged at the motor or controller
  • One or more hall sensors inside the motor hub failed
  • Hall sensor wires damaged — pinched in the frame or chafed through
  • Throttle signal wire broken or connector corroded
  • Water ingress into the motor hub or throttle body causing sensor failure

How to Fix It

  1. Power cycle the e-bike completely.

Hold the power button until the display turns off. Wait 30 seconds. Power on again. Some transient controller errors clear with a full restart. If Error 08 returns immediately, the fault is persistent and needs diagnosis.

  2. Check the hall sensor connector at the motor.

The hall sensor cable exits the motor hub through a sealed port and connects to the controller via a multi-pin connector — usually a 5-pin plug separate from the phase wire connector. Unplug it, inspect for bent pins, corrosion, or water, and reconnect firmly.

  3. Check the throttle connector and wire.

On bikes where Error 08 is a throttle fault, check the throttle wire from the handlebar grip to the controller connector. Look for any kinks, cuts, or corroded pins. Try unplugging and replugging the throttle connector.

  4. Test the hall sensors with a multimeter.

Hall sensors output 0V or 5V as the motor spins. With the motor connector unplugged, use a multimeter on DC voltage: apply 5V to the sensor power wire and ground, then slowly turn the motor axle by hand. Each sensor should toggle between 0V and 5V. A sensor that stays at one voltage has failed.

  5. Inspect for water damage.

E-bikes used in rain can get water into the motor axle port where the sensor wires exit. Water causes sensor failure and connector corrosion. If you see water residue, allow to dry fully and apply dielectric grease to the connectors.

When to Call a Professional

Hall sensor replacement requires opening the motor hub, which requires a spoke puller and hub disassembly tools. Most riders take this to a specialist e-bike workshop.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Error 08 the same on all e-bike brands?

No — error codes are not standardised across e-bike brands and controller manufacturers. Error 08 means different things on different systems. Always check your specific e-bike display manual or controller documentation to confirm what Error 08 means on your model.

Can I ride an e-bike with Error 08?

Usually no — Error 08 disables the motor. You can ride the bike using pedal power only, but the motor assistance will not function until the fault is resolved.
