E2
Bowflex Treadmill
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Bowflex Error E2 indicates the motor drew excessive current — an overload condition. The most common causes are a belt that is too tight or insufficiently lubricated, the motor overheating after extended use, or a failing motor controller. Lubricate the belt and check belt tension before any other steps.
Affected Models
- Bowflex BXT116
- Bowflex BXT216
- Bowflex T10
- Bowflex T22
- Bowflex Results Series Treadmill
Common Causes
- Walking belt too tight — increases friction load on the motor
- Insufficient belt lubrication — dry belt creates excessive motor load
- Motor overheated from extended use at high speed or incline
- User weight exceeding the machine's rated maximum — common contributor
- Motor controller (MCB) failing and incorrectly triggering overcurrent protection
- Drive motor itself failing — worn brushes or winding fault
How to Fix It
-
Stop using the machine immediately and unplug it.
An E2 overload fault means the motor thermal protection has tripped. Continuing to attempt to run the machine before it cools can permanently damage the motor. Allow at least 30-60 minutes for the motor to cool before troubleshooting.
-
Check walking belt tension.
Insert two fingers under the edge of the walking belt at the center — you should be able to lift it 2-3 inches. If it barely lifts, the belt is too tight. Use the Allen key (stored in the frame) to turn both rear roller bolts counter-clockwise half a turn, then retest. An overtightened belt is the most common cause of E2 on Bowflex treadmills.
-
Lubricate the walking belt.
If the belt has not been lubricated in the past 3-6 months (or 40-50 hours of use), apply silicone treadmill lubricant under the walking belt. Dry belt friction significantly increases motor current draw, especially at higher speeds. Bowflex recommends using only 100% silicone lubricant.
-
Plug back in and reset by pressing Stop/Reset.
After the machine has cooled and belt maintenance is done, plug it back in. Press the Stop or Reset button on the console to clear the E2 code. Start at a slow speed (2-3 mph) and verify the machine runs without faulting before increasing speed.
-
Contact Bowflex support if E2 returns after belt maintenance.
Recurring E2 after correct belt tension and lubrication points to a failing motor controller (MCB) or a motor with worn brushes. Bowflex support (0800 or the website) can advise on whether a technician visit or part replacement is needed under your warranty.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I lubricate my Bowflex treadmill belt?
Bowflex recommends lubricating every 3 months or every 40-50 hours of use, whichever comes first. In households with heavier daily use or in low-humidity environments, lubrication may be needed more frequently. A well-lubricated belt runs cooler, makes less noise, and extends the motor's lifespan significantly.
Can the E2 error appear if I exceed the weight limit?
Yes. Bowflex treadmills have maximum user weight ratings (typically 300-375 lbs depending on model). Exceeding this puts additional mechanical load on the belt and motor, increasing current draw. E2 errors at normal speeds with correct belt tension can indicate the machine is being asked to handle more weight than it is rated for.
