INSERT KEY

Horizon Treadmill

Severity: Minor

What it means

'INSERT KEY' (some Horizon models display '- - -' or 'KEY' instead) means the console can't see the safety magnet that the red safety key — the lanyard you clip to your clothes — holds onto the console.
Without that magnet pressing the safety reed switch underneath, the treadmill refuses to start.
It's not a fault; it's the safety system doing its job.
The usual reasons are the clip not seated firmly, the magnet inside the clip has fallen out, the reed switch beneath it has failed, or the safety key has been lost.

Affected Models

  • All Horizon treadmills (every motorised treadmill has a safety key system)
  • Same behaviour on Vision Fitness treadmills using the Horizon platform
  • Common after the safety key falls behind the treadmill and gets lost

Common Causes

  • Safety key clip not seated firmly on the console magnet pad
  • Magnet inside the red plastic clip has come loose or fallen out
  • Reed switch beneath the magnet pad has failed (rare)
  • Console wiring to the reed switch loose or unplugged
  • Safety key lost — common after a sharp pull yanked it off
  • Replacement / aftermarket key has the wrong magnet strength
  • Console firmware glitch after a power cut

How to Fix It

  1. Reseat the safety key.

Look at the red plastic clip on top of the console (or sometimes recessed into a slot).
Lift it off, then place it firmly back on the pad — flat side down, centred over the marked area.
You may feel it click or settle into a recess.
'INSERT KEY' often clears immediately when the magnet is properly aligned.

  2. Check the clip has a magnet inside.

Carefully look at the underside of the red plastic clip — there should be a small black or silver disc magnet visible (or just feel it tugging on a fridge magnet for confirmation).
If the magnet has fallen out, the clip can't trip the reed switch.
A replacement safety key is £5–£10 / $5–$15 from Horizon parts or many third-party sellers — they're a standard part.

  3. Power-cycle the treadmill.

Switch the on/off rocker at the front off, unplug the mains for a minute, plug back in.
This clears a one-off glitch where the console didn't see the magnet at boot.
Confirm the key is in place when you power back on; many Horizon consoles only check the safety key at start, not continuously.

  4. Look for a spare key magnet.

Most Horizon treadmills ship with the safety key already attached; the same key works for any Horizon model that uses the standard 'pull-cord' style.
If yours is lost, any compatible Horizon safety key works — your model number is on the sticker under the console.
For a temporary stopgap, the magnet from any inexpensive replacement key gets you going again; do not use a stronger or weaker magnet from craft supplies, since the reed switch is tuned to the standard strength.

  5. Check the reed switch wiring (advanced).

If you've tried a known-good safety key from another Horizon and 'INSERT KEY' still shows, the reed switch or its wiring is the next suspect.
Unplug the mains, remove the console (a few screws on the back of the upright), and inspect the small two-wire harness that runs from the safety key pad to the main console board.
    Push connectors firmly home.
Look for any wires that have broken at the solder joint.

  6. Replace the reed switch / contact support.

A failed reed switch is a small but specific repair — the switch is mounted just under the safety key pad and the part itself is a couple of pounds.
For owners comfortable with a soldering iron, replacement is straightforward; for everyone else, contact Horizon support to ship the part and a service guide or to dispatch a technician.
This failure is rare; most 'INSERT KEY' cases never reach this step.

When to Call a Professional

INSERT KEY is almost always an owner fix — a new key is cheap and a one-minute install.
Call a technician only if a known-good safety key from another Horizon doesn't restore operation, since that points at the reed switch or the console wiring.
If the key is missing and you can't find a replacement quickly, do not bypass the safety key system with a magnet taped to the console — that defeats the protection that stops the belt if you fall.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I run my Horizon treadmill without the safety key?

You shouldn't, and on most models you can't.
The safety key is the only thing that stops the belt instantly if you trip or stumble — that's why it's clipped to your clothing on a short lanyard.
A treadmill running with no way to be stopped quickly is genuinely dangerous, especially for children or anyone less steady on their feet.
If you've lost the key, order a replacement — they're a few pounds and most Horizon-compatible keys are universal across the brand.
Bypassing the safety with tape or a permanent magnet is a bad idea: it disables the safety net you need most when you actually fall.
