Error E2
NordicTrack Treadmill
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
NordicTrack Error E2 means the motor controller has detected a drive motor fault — typically caused by the motor overheating, the belt running too tight, or excessive friction from a dry walking deck. Unplug the treadmill, allow it to cool for 30 minutes, lubricate the belt, and adjust belt tension before retrying.
Affected Models
- NordicTrack Commercial 1750
- NordicTrack Commercial 2450
- NordicTrack T Series
- NordicTrack EXP series
- NordicTrack S series treadmills
Common Causes
- Drive motor overheated from extended use without adequate airflow
- Belt too tight — excessive tension increases motor load and causes overheating
- Walking deck dry — insufficient belt lubrication creates friction that overloads the motor
- Motor brushes worn (on brushed DC motor models) — causes high resistance and motor fault codes
- Motor controller failing — triggering false E2 after reset
How to Fix It
-
Unplug and allow the treadmill to cool for at least 30 minutes.
E2 often indicates the motor thermal cutout has activated. Unplugging allows both the motor and the motor controller to cool and reset. Do not simply press the reset button — a full power cycle is required.
-
Lubricate the walking deck under the belt.
Lift the belt at the centre and spray 100% silicone lubricant under the belt along the deck surface from one side, then the other. A dry deck dramatically increases motor load and is the most common cause of recurring E2. Apply lubrication every 150 hours of use.
-
Check belt tension.
Lift the running belt at the centre edge — it should rise approximately 8–10 cm off the deck. If it barely lifts, the belt is too tight. Use the belt tension bolts at the rear roller (usually an Allen key) — turn both equally counter-clockwise (one-quarter turn each) to loosen.
-
Check the motor cover vents for dust buildup.
Remove the motor hood cover (usually 2–4 screws) and vacuum out any dust and hair from the motor and controller area. A blocked motor compartment prevents heat from escaping and causes thermal shutdowns.
-
Test the motor brushes on older models.
On NordicTrack treadmills with brushed DC motors, worn brushes cause high current draw and trigger E2. Look inside the motor through the vent holes with a torch — brushes should be at least 5 mm long. Short brushes or visible sparking means replacement is needed.
When to Call a Professional
If E2 reappears within minutes of restarting after a cool-down and lubrication, the motor brushes may be worn (on older models) or the motor itself has failed. Contact NordicTrack support for a service appointment.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I lubricate my NordicTrack treadmill belt?
NordicTrack recommends lubricating every 150 hours of use, or every 3 months if used regularly. If the belt squeaks during use or E2 errors appear frequently, lubrication is overdue.
What lubricant should I use on a NordicTrack treadmill?
Only 100% silicone lubricant — never petroleum-based oil, WD-40, or furniture polish. Petroleum products degrade the belt and deck. NordicTrack sells a branded silicone lubricant, or any 100% silicone treadmill lube from a sports store works.
