E5

NordicTrack Treadmill

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

E5 means the speed sensor that reads belt speed has failed.
The console can't tell how fast the belt is actually moving, so it stops the treadmill for safety.
Common causes are a magnet that's fallen off the front roller, or the sensor itself failing.
Both are repairable but require pulling the front cover.

Affected Models

  • NordicTrack T 6.5 S
  • NordicTrack Commercial 1750
  • NordicTrack X22i
  • NordicTrack EXP 7i
  • NordicTrack 1750

Common Causes

  • Magnet fallen off the front roller (common after years of use)
  • Speed sensor itself failed
  • Wiring between sensor and console damaged
  • Sensor distance set wrong — too far from the magnet to read
  • Console board input fault (uncommon)

How to Fix It

  1. Stop using the treadmill.

E5 means the console can't verify belt speed.
    That's a safety lockout — don't try to override.
The console will refuse to start the belt until the sensor is fixed.

  2. Power-cycle the treadmill.

Switch off at the wall, wait 5 minutes, switch on.
Some E5 events from a transient sensor glitch clear after a power-cycle.
Try starting a workout — if the belt runs normally, you're done.
If E5 returns the moment you start, the sensor is genuinely faulty.

  3. Look for a fallen magnet.

If you're comfortable removing the front cover, look at the front roller.
There should be a small magnet attached to it — usually visible if you spin the roller by hand.
If the magnet is gone, that's why the sensor reads no signal.
Replacement magnets are $5–$15 from iFit.

  4. Check the sensor distance.

The speed sensor is mounted near the front roller and reads the magnet as it passes.
Distance should be 2–3mm — close, but not touching.
If the sensor has shifted further away or closer, it stops reading correctly.
Most sensors are held by one or two screws and easy to adjust.

  5. Book service for sensor or console diagnosis.

If the magnet is in place and the sensor is at the right distance, the sensor itself or the wiring is the issue.
    iFit-authorised service handles this routinely.
Sensor part is $20–$50; total fitted is $100–$200.

When to Call a Professional

E5 is service-territory because the front cover needs to come off and the front roller area accessed.
Some users do this themselves with patience and a screwdriver.
An iFit technician completes the repair in 30–60 minutes for $100–$200 fitted, depending on whether parts are needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the belt run but the console shows zero speed?

On some NordicTrack models, the motor will run even without sensor input — but the safety circuit catches it within seconds and triggers E5.
If you see the belt moving with E5 displayed, it's a brief moment before shutdown.
Don't assume the sensor is fine just because the belt moved a little.

Is E5 dangerous?

Not directly — the console catches it and stops the belt.
But sustained operation with a faulty sensor would mean the speed display is wrong, which is a workout-quality issue and a safety issue if you're using auto-incline workouts.
The lockout exists for good reason; don't bypass it.
