Cadence Not Tracking / Shows 0 RPM

Peloton Exercise Bike

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Peloton cadence showing 0 or not tracking is most often caused by the small magnet on the flywheel having moved away from the cadence sensor. Locate the magnet on the flywheel and the sensor on the frame, and adjust the magnet so it passes within 3–5mm of the sensor during each revolution.

Affected Models

  • Peloton Bike (original)
  • Peloton Bike+

Common Causes

  • Flywheel magnet shifted out of alignment with the cadence sensor
  • Cadence sensor cable loose or disconnected from the main board
  • Cadence sensor itself damaged or corroded
  • Software glitch — screen shows 0 but sensor is working (console restart fixes this)
  • Peloton Bike+ has built-in auto-calibration — if cadence reads wrong, a calibration is needed

How to Fix It

  1. Locate the cadence magnet and sensor.

On the original Peloton Bike, the cadence sensor is attached to the inside of the frame near the flywheel. The magnet is a small rectangular piece affixed to the flywheel rim. Slowly rotate the pedals by hand and watch for the magnet to pass near the sensor.

  2. Check the magnet-to-sensor gap.

The magnet should pass within 3–5mm of the sensor face on each revolution. If the magnet has shifted to an outer or inner position on the flywheel, the sensor cannot detect it. Loosen the magnet's set screw, reposition it closer to the sensor, and retighten. The magnet should pass the sensor centre, not the edge.

  3. Restart the Peloton touchscreen.

A cadence of 0 that suddenly appears mid-ride is sometimes a display glitch rather than a sensor failure. Hold the power button for 5 seconds and restart the touchscreen. After restart, start a new class or Just Ride session and check whether cadence registers immediately.

  4. Check the sensor cable connection.

The cadence sensor connects to the main electronics board via a small cable. If the bike has been moved recently or vibration has shaken the connector loose, no signal reaches the console. Unplug the bike, access the sensor cable connection (consult the Peloton service manual for your model), and firmly reseat it.

  5. Run calibration on the Bike+.

Peloton Bike+ uses an auto-calibration system for resistance and cadence. From Settings > Device Settings > Bike Calibration, run the full calibration process. Calibration corrects any drift in the sensor readings without manual hardware adjustment.

When to Call a Professional

If the cadence magnet is confirmed aligned and the sensor connection is secure, but cadence still does not register, the cadence sensor needs replacement. Contact Peloton support for a service appointment or replacement part.
