Overheating

Nintendo Switch

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Ensure the Switch vents (right side in handheld, top when docked) are not blocked by a case or surface. Clean the vent grilles with a short burst of compressed air to remove dust buildup. When docked, make sure the dock is not inside an enclosed cabinet — the Switch needs airflow to cool.

Affected Models

  • Nintendo Switch (HAC-001 / HAC-001(-01))
  • Nintendo Switch V2 (HAC-001(-01))
  • Nintendo Switch OLED (HEG-001)

Common Causes

  • Vents blocked by a protective case that covers the fan outlet
  • Dust buildup in the fan and heatsink reducing airflow
  • Playing docked in an enclosed entertainment unit with no ventilation
  • Thermal paste on the CPU dried out after years of use
  • Intensive games (Breath of the Wild, Metroid Dread) pushing the processor to max

How to Fix It

  1. Check the vent is not blocked

The fan exhaust vent is on the top-right edge of the Switch. In handheld mode, ensure your case does not cover this vent. In docked mode, the dock's back panel should be open.

  2. Clean the vents with compressed air

Power off the Switch and use short bursts of compressed air into the vent grilles. Dust inside the fan is the most common cause of overheating in older Switch units (2+ years old).

  3. Move the dock out of enclosed spaces

Do not place the Switch dock inside a closed TV cabinet or shelf with no airflow. The dock adds additional heat. Leave at least 10 cm of clearance above and behind the dock.

  4. Remove the case during intensive games

Thick protective cases (especially silicone ones) can act as insulation. Remove the case when playing demanding titles for extended sessions.

  5. Take a break if you see the temperature warning

The Switch displays an on-screen message and dims before shutting down when it overheats. Stop using it, let it cool for 30 minutes in open air, then resume. Repeated warnings indicate a cleaning or thermal paste issue.

When to Call a Professional

If the Switch shuts down automatically during light gameplay even with clean vents, the thermal paste on the CPU has dried out. A technician can reapply it — this typically costs $30–$60 at third-party repair shops.

Frequently Asked Questions

Nintendo Switch gets hot but no warning message — is that normal?

The Switch runs warm during demanding games — this is normal. It only becomes a problem if you feel intense heat from the vent, the fan is very loud, or the on-screen temperature warning appears.

Switch OLED overheating — is it worse than the original Switch?

The Switch OLED runs slightly cooler due to a more efficient processor revision. If your Switch OLED is overheating, a blocked vent or heavy dust buildup is the likely cause.

Nintendo Switch fan very loud — does it mean overheating?

A loud fan means the Switch is working hard to cool itself — not necessarily overheating, but a warning sign. Clean the vents with compressed air. If the fan noise persists even during simple menus, the fan bearing may be worn.
