Blink 1-2

Chamberlain Garage Door Opener

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Blink 1-2 is the travel module fault — the small electronics board that tells the opener where the door is in its travel.
Either the module's wiring has come loose, the module itself has failed, or the travel limits need to be reset.
Power-cycle the opener at the breaker, then redo the travel limits per the manual.
If 1-2 returns, the module needs replacement.

Affected Models

  • Chamberlain B970
  • Chamberlain B1381
  • Chamberlain RJO70
  • Chamberlain B6753T
  • Chamberlain belt-drive openers

Common Causes

  • Travel module connector loose at the main board
  • Travel module wiring damaged
  • Travel limits corrupted after a power surge
  • Travel module itself failed
  • Door was forced manually past its travel range

How to Fix It

  1. Power off at the breaker.

Find the breaker for the garage circuit and switch it off.
Wait 60 seconds for capacitors to discharge.
This is safer than just unplugging because it ensures the entire opener is de-energized.

  2. Inspect the travel module wiring.

Open the back panel of the opener (usually a single screw).
Find the small ribbon cable or connector going to the travel module — labeled in some manuals.
    Push it firmly to reseat.
Look for any obvious damage to the wires.

  3. Restore power and check.

    Turn the breaker back on.
Watch the opener — does the LED still blink 1-2?
If it changed to a different blink pattern, the comms with the module is restored but travel limits need resetting.
If still 1-2, proceed to reset.

  4. Reset the travel limits.

Find the up/down limit adjustment screws on the side of the opener (or the travel limit menu in newer models).
Follow your manual's procedure — typically: hold the up button until the door reaches the open position, then release; hold down until closed; press limit set.
This rebuilds the module's understanding of door range.

  5. Replace the module if blink 1-2 persists.

If wiring is good and limits are reset but blink 1-2 returns, the module itself is faulty.
Replacement modules run 30–60 USD from Chamberlain.
Installation is one connector and two screws.
Match the part number for your specific opener model.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does blink 1-2 happen after a power outage?

Power surges and outages can corrupt the travel module's stored memory of where the door's open and close limits are.
The module knows it can't trust its data and reports blink 1-2.
Re-running the limit-set procedure rebuilds the data and clears the code.

Can I bypass the travel module?

No — the opener relies on it to know when to stop the motor at top and bottom of travel.
Without it, the door would run into the floor or the top of the rail.
Replace the module rather than trying to bypass.
