1-4

Chamberlain Garage Door Opener

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Blink code 1-4 (one flash, pause, four flashes) means the photo-eye safety sensors are not aligned with each other. The receiving sensor cannot see the beam from the sending sensor. Realign the sensors so both LEDs glow steady green.

How to Fix It

  1. Look at the green LED on the receiving sensor (the one furthest from the wall outlet). If it is off or flickering, the sensors are misaligned.

  2. Loosen the wing nut or thumb screw on the bracket of the receiving sensor. Slowly tilt the sensor up, down, left, and right until the green LED glows steadily.

  3. Tighten the wing nut without moving the sensor head. Repeat the process on the sending sensor if its amber LED is also dim or flickering.

  4. Wipe both sensor lenses with a clean dry cloth to remove cobwebs, dust, or insect debris. A dirty lens scatters the beam and causes intermittent 1-4 errors.

  5. Verify the sensors are at the same height on each side of the door (typically 4-6 inches above the floor) and that nothing is blocking the beam between them. Test the door — it should now close normally.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do my Chamberlain sensors keep going out of alignment?

The most common causes are loose mounting brackets, bumps from cars or lawn equipment, settling of the garage door tracks, and rust on the bracket. Tighten the brackets firmly and inspect for damage.

Can sunlight cause blink code 1-4?

Yes. Direct sunlight shining on the receiving sensor lens during certain times of day can overwhelm the photo-eye and cause it to lose the beam. Add a small sun shield or reposition the sensor.

My green LED is on but the door still will not close — what next?

If both LEDs glow steady but the door still will not close, the sensors are aligned but the logic board may not see them. Check the sensor wires for damage and the terminal connections at the opener.
