Blink 2-1
Chamberlain Garage Door Opener
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Blink 2-1 means the wires running from the opener to the wall control are shorted together.
The opener is detecting that the two terminals it normally reads as 'press for action' are showing a constant short — like the button is being held forever.
Most often it's a staple piercing the wire, two wires touching where insulation is damaged, or a stuck wall button.
Inspect the wire run end-to-end.
Affected Models
- Chamberlain B970
- Chamberlain B1381
- Chamberlain RJO70
- Chamberlain B6753T
- Chamberlain belt-drive openers
Common Causes
- Staple driven through the wire pinching it
- Wires touching where insulation chafed against a metal edge
- Wall button stuck physically pressed in
- Wall button internal contacts welded together
- Wire damaged at the wall control connection
How to Fix It
-
Disconnect the wall control wires at the opener.
Find the two terminals on the back of the opener labeled for the wall control (usually red and white).
Loosen each terminal and pull the wires off.
If blink 2-1 clears with the wires disconnected, the issue is in the wires or the wall control itself. -
Test the wall control with the wires off.
With wires disconnected from the opener, ohm-test or visually inspect the wall button.
Press it — does it click and release normally, or does it feel stuck?
A stuck button is the simplest cause — replace if it feels wrong. -
Walk the wire run.
Trace the wires from the opener to the wall control.
Look for staples piercing the insulation, kinks where wires were forced around corners, or any place where two wires might be touching due to damaged insulation.
Common culprit: staple where the wire passes a wall stud. -
Replace damaged sections.
If you find a damaged spot, cut out the bad section and splice in fresh wire.
Use weatherproof connectors or solder and heat-shrink — don't rely on twist-ties for a wall installation.
Re-route the wire to avoid the original damage point. -
Reconnect and test.
Reconnect both wires to the opener terminals.
Test the wall control — should activate the door once when pressed.
If blink 2-1 returns immediately, the issue is still present in the wire run; recheck for shorts.
If it works, you've found and fixed it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a child holding the wall button cause blink 2-1?
Yes — if a child has been holding the button down for an extended period, the opener may interpret that as a short and report 2-1.
Release the button, wait a moment, and try again.
This is rare but worth checking before investigating wires.
Should I replace the whole wire instead of splicing?
If the wire is old or you've already found one bad spot, yes — running a fresh length of bell wire is faster than chasing multiple bad points.
It's inexpensive (10 USD for 50 feet) and gives you confidence in the install for years.
Run it cleanly without staples piercing the insulation.
