Blink 2-1
Craftsman Garage Door Opener
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Blink 2-1 on a Craftsman opener means the wall control wires are shorted together — the opener reads them as a continuously held button.
Most often a staple has pierced the wires, two wires are touching where insulation is damaged, or the wall button is mechanically stuck.
Disconnect the wall wires at the opener — if blink 2-1 clears, the issue is in the wires or button.
Walk the run to find the short.
Affected Models
- Craftsman 1/2 HP
- Craftsman 3/4 HP belt drive
- Craftsman chain drive
- Craftsman Smart opener
Common Causes
- Staple piercing the wire insulation
- Wires touching where insulation chafed
- Wall button stuck physically pressed in
- Wall button contacts welded together
- Damaged wire near the wall control connection
How to Fix It
-
Disconnect the wall control wires at the opener.
Find the wall control terminals on the back of the opener (red and white wires usually).
Loosen each terminal and pull the wires out.
If blink 2-1 clears immediately, the issue is in the wires or the wall button — not the opener itself. -
Test the wall button.
With wires disconnected from the opener, press the wall button.
Does it click and release normally, or feel stuck?
If you can hear a constant click or it stays depressed, the wall button is the cause.
Replace it (10–20 USD). -
Walk the wire run.
Trace the wires from the opener to the wall button.
Look for staples piercing the insulation, kinks where the wires were forced around corners, and any place the two wires might be touching.
The wire usually runs across the ceiling and down the wall — check both sections. -
Cut out and splice damaged sections.
If you find a damaged spot, cut out the bad section and splice in fresh wire.
Use weatherproof connectors and wrap with electrical tape.
Re-route the wire to avoid the original damage point — don't run it over the staple that caused the problem. -
Reconnect and test.
With repairs done, reconnect both wires to the opener terminals.
Press the wall button — should activate the door once.
If blink 2-1 returns immediately, recheck for shorts.
If it works, you've fixed it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safer to run a new wire end-to-end?
Yes — for old wires that have been chewed by years of staples and bends, running a fresh length of bell wire is faster than chasing multiple bad spots.
It's 10 USD for 50 feet at any hardware store.
Run cleanly without staples piercing insulation.
Can blink 2-1 be triggered by something else?
Rarely — but a stuck wall button or a stuck wired-in keypad acts the same way (constant signal).
If the wall button works fine and the wire run is clean but blink 2-1 still appears, check any wired keypads or remotes that might be sending a constant signal.
Disconnect them temporarily to isolate the cause.
