4-2

Craftsman Garage Door Opener

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Blink code 4-2 means a safety sensor wire is making contact with a grounded metal surface — typically the door track. This is a wiring short, not a sensor alignment issue. Inspect the wires along the tracks for damage.

Affected Models

  • Craftsman 54985
  • Craftsman 57915
  • Craftsman AssureLink
  • Craftsman 1/2 HP Chain Drive
  • Craftsman Belt Drive Series

Common Causes

  • Sensor wire insulation worn against the metal door track
  • Staple or nail piercing the sensor wire and contacting grounded metal
  • Sensor wire terminals touching the metal mounting bracket
  • Bare wire touching the track or floor

How to Fix It

  1. Trace both sensor wires from sensors to the opener.

Walk the full length of each sensor wire looking for contact with metal tracks, staples through the insulation, or areas where wire insulation is visibly worn.

  2. Check the sensor mounting brackets.

At each sensor, ensure the wires are connected only to the sensor terminals. The wire insulation should not be touching the metal bracket that holds the sensor to the track.

  3. Disconnect sensors one at a time to isolate the fault.

Disconnect the wires at one sensor at a time and check if 4-2 clears. This pinpoints which sensor's wiring is shorted to ground.

  4. Repair or replace the damaged wire section.

Wrap any exposed copper with electrical tape temporarily. For a permanent fix, replace the damaged section with 18–22 gauge two-conductor wire. Use plastic wire clips rather than metal staples when re-routing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Craftsman blink code 1-1 and 4-2?

Code 1-1 means the sensor circuit is not detected — sensors are disconnected or wires are broken. Code 4-2 means the circuit is detected but has a short to ground. Both require wiring inspection but are different faults.

Can my Craftsman door still be operated manually with code 4-2?

Yes — pull the red emergency release cord on the trolley to disengage the opener from the door. The door can then be opened and closed by hand while you fix the wiring.
