Blink 1-1

LiftMaster Garage Door Opener

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Blink 1-1 on a LiftMaster opener means the controller can't read one of its expected wire connections — wires are loose, broken, or completely disconnected.
Check the wall control wires and photo eye wires at the opener terminals.
Push each wire firmly into its terminal.
If wires look intact, walk the run looking for staples or chafing damage.
Most blink 1-1 events fix in 5 minutes.

Affected Models

  • LiftMaster 8500
  • LiftMaster 8550W
  • LiftMaster 8587
  • LiftMaster 8500W
  • LiftMaster Elite series

Common Causes

  • Wall control wire loose at the opener terminal
  • Photo eye wire disconnected
  • Wire broken at a staple or sharp bend
  • Wires stripped too long causing intermittent contact
  • Insulation damaged where two wires touch and ground out

How to Fix It

  1. Power off at the breaker.

Working at the opener terminals safely requires power off.
Switch the garage circuit breaker off.
Wait 30 seconds before opening any covers.

  2. Check the wall control terminals.

On the back of the opener, find the two terminals for the wall control (usually labeled with red and white wires).
Push each wire firmly into its terminal.
If a wire pulls out easily, the strip is too long or the terminal isn't gripping — strip 8mm of fresh wire and reinsert.

  3. Check the photo eye terminals.

Two more terminals on the opener for the photo eye sensors.
    Inspect both sets of wires.
A broken wire here is one of the most common blink 1-1 causes since photo eye wires run along the floor where they get kicked or pinched.

  4. Walk the wire runs.

Trace each wire from the opener to its destination.
Look for: staples piercing the insulation (most common), wires kinked tight around door tracks, ends frayed where they exit the terminals.
Any visible damage is a candidate for blink 1-1.

  5. Replace damaged wires.

Cut out the damaged section and splice in fresh wire with weatherproof connectors.
Or run a brand-new length end-to-end if you found multiple damage points.
Bell wire (the standard low-voltage opener wiring) is 10–15 USD for 50 feet at any hardware store.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does blink 1-1 happen after years of working fine?

Wires under staples gradually get pinched tighter as the wood swells and shrinks with humidity.
Eventually a strand breaks, then more, then the connection fails.
This is why blink 1-1 often appears years after install with no obvious cause.
Walking the run finds the failed staple.

Can pets cause blink 1-1?

Yes — dogs and cats sometimes chew low-voltage wires, especially the ones running across the garage floor to the photo eyes.
If you have pets and blink 1-1 keeps recurring, look for chew marks.
Run wires through conduit or above pet height to prevent.
