Blink 1-4
LiftMaster Garage Door Opener
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Blink 1-4 is the travel switch fault — typically a mechanical micro-switch that signals when the door has reached its travel limit.
The switch is stuck, broken, or not being triggered correctly by the trolley.
Inspect the switch arm — it should depress when the trolley reaches it.
If bent or stuck, straighten or replace.
Most cases are a 5-minute fix.
Affected Models
- LiftMaster 8500
- LiftMaster 8550W
- LiftMaster 8587
- LiftMaster 8500W
- LiftMaster Elite series
Common Causes
- Switch arm bent away from the trolley contact path
- Switch contacts welded together or stuck open
- Switch wiring loose at the controller
- Trolley travel range exceeded the switch position
- Switch itself worn out (10+ years of use)
How to Fix It
-
Power off and locate the travel switches.
Switch the breaker off.
Look at the rail near the trolley's two extreme positions (one at the open end, one at the closed end).
Each has a small switch with a springy arm that the trolley contacts at end of travel. -
Inspect the switch arms.
Each switch arm should stick out into the trolley's path.
If a switch arm is bent away, the trolley passes without triggering it — that's blink 1-4.
Bend it gently back toward the trolley path with pliers.
Don't over-bend — the spring should still flex when contact is made. -
Test by manually moving the trolley.
With power off, manually push the trolley along the rail (release the rope first if it's locked to the door).
As you reach each end, the trolley should depress the switch arm — listen for a click.
If no click, the switch is broken inside and needs replacement. -
Check the switch wiring.
Each switch has two thin wires running back to the controller.
Push each wire connector firmly to reseat.
Look for any wire that's frayed where it enters the connector — frayed wires cause intermittent blink 1-4. -
Replace the switch if necessary.
If the arm is straight, wires are tight, and the switch still doesn't click, the switch itself has failed.
Replacement switches are 10–15 USD from LiftMaster.
Two screws and a wire connector — 5-minute swap.
Match the part number for your specific opener.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will the door work with blink 1-4?
Sometimes partially — the opener may run the door but stop at the wrong position, or refuse to operate entirely.
Don't keep using it through blink 1-4 — without the travel switches working, the trolley can run past safe limits and damage the rail or the door.
Fix it before next use.
Why do switches fail after 10+ years?
Mechanical switches have limited cycle life — typically 100,000 to 1 million presses.
A door used 4 times a day for 15 years racks up around 22,000 cycles, well within rated life.
But weather exposure (temperature swings, humidity) ages them faster.
Garages in humid climates wear switches out sooner.
