Blink 4-2

LiftMaster Garage Door Opener

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Blink 4-2 means one or both travel limits aren't set — the opener doesn't know where to stop the door at top or bottom of travel.
This is common after installation, after a power surge, or after replacing the rail or trolley.
Run the limit-set procedure: drive door to fully open, save; drive to fully closed, save.
Five minutes and blink 4-2 clears.

Affected Models

  • LiftMaster 8500
  • LiftMaster 8550W
  • LiftMaster 8587
  • LiftMaster 8500W
  • LiftMaster Elite series

Common Causes

  • Limits never set after installation
  • Limits cleared by a power surge
  • Limit-set procedure interrupted partway through
  • Rail or trolley replaced without redoing limits
  • Travel module fault preventing limits from being saved

How to Fix It

  1. Locate the limit set buttons.

On most LiftMaster models, there's a yellow learn button on the back of the opener plus up/down arrows.
Some models use the wall control to set limits.
Find your model's procedure in the manual or on LiftMaster's online support.

  2. Drive the door to fully open.

Hold the up arrow until the door is fully open.
If the opener stops before fully open (because limits aren't set), manually push the door the rest of the way (with motor disengaged via emergency release).
The fully open position is where the door rolls level with the rail.

  3. Save the open limit.

Press and hold the limit set button (usually labeled 'Up Limit' or similar).
You should hear a click or see the LED change.
The opener has now stored the open position.
Don't move the door until you've also saved the close limit.

  4. Drive the door to fully closed.

Hold the down arrow until the door reaches the floor and just touches it.
Don't let it slam — release the button when the door first contacts the floor.
The fully closed position is where the bottom of the door is just resting on the floor with no force pressing into it.

  5. Save the close limit and test.

Press and hold the down limit set button.
The opener saves the close position.
Now press the wall control or remote to run a complete cycle.
The door should open and close smoothly, stopping at the saved limits.
    Blink 4-2 should be gone.

Frequently Asked Questions

How precise should the limits be?

Open: door should be at the top of its travel where it rolls level with the rail.
Close: bottom of door just touching the floor without pressing into it.
If close limit is too aggressive (door pushes hard into the floor), the opener will reverse before fully closing as a safety.
Adjust slightly higher.

Why does blink 4-2 appear after a power outage?

Power surges can corrupt the controller's stored limits, especially on older LiftMaster boards.
The board knows it can't trust its data and reports blink 4-2 instead of risking running past safe limits.
Re-running the procedure rebuilds the stored data.
