Alarm: Charger Missing AC

Generac Generator

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Generac Alarm: Charger Missing AC means the battery trickle charger inside the enclosure is not receiving 120V AC. Without charging, the standby battery will slowly drain until the auto-start fails. A tripped breaker on the charger circuit or a loose wire at the transfer switch is the most common cause.

Affected Models

  • Generac Guardian 7043
  • Generac Guardian 7172
  • Generac Guardian 22kW
  • Generac Guardian 24kW
  • Generac Protector 15kW

Common Causes

  • The dedicated 120V breaker feeding the battery charger has tripped or been switched off
  • Wiring from the transfer switch to the charger input is loose or corroded
  • The automatic transfer switch did not restore utility power to the charger circuit after a power event
  • The battery charger board inside the generator control panel has failed

How to Fix It

  1. Check the dedicated breaker for the battery charger circuit

Locate the breaker panel feeding the generator site. There should be a dedicated 15A or 20A breaker for the charger. If it has tripped, reset it and wait a few minutes — the alarm should clear once the charger receives power again.

  2. Inspect wiring from the transfer switch to the generator charger input

With power off, check the low-voltage wiring harness running from the automatic transfer switch to the generator's control board. Look for loose terminals, chewed wires, or corrosion. Secure any loose connections and apply dielectric grease to terminals.

  3. Verify the transfer switch has properly restored utility power

After any outage or maintenance, the transfer switch should return the charger circuit to utility. If the switch is stuck or partially transferred, the charger receives no power. Cycle the switch manually per the manufacturer's instructions.

  4. Measure battery charger output voltage with a multimeter

At the battery terminals, a healthy Generac charger reads 13.5–13.8V across a 12V battery when AC is present. Zero output voltage with a live AC supply means the charger board has failed and needs replacement.

  5. Call a Generac dealer if the alarm persists after all checks

If the breaker is good, wiring is secure, and the transfer switch is correctly positioned, the charger board itself may have failed. Board replacement is typically straightforward, but should be done by a licensed Generac technician to protect the warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the generator still safe to use with the Charger Missing AC alarm active?

The generator will start and run normally on the existing battery charge. Without the trickle charger, however, the battery will slowly self-discharge over weeks. If the battery goes flat, the automatic start will fail during the next real outage. Restore the charger circuit as soon as possible.

How long will the standby battery last without the charger?

A fully charged Generac standby battery typically holds charge for 1–3 months without a trickle charger. Cold temperatures and frequent exercise cycles drain it faster. Do not leave the charger fault unresolved for more than a few weeks or you risk losing automatic start capability.
