Alarm: Exercise Failure
Generac Generator
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Generac Alarm: Exercise Failure means the weekly exercise cycle either failed to start or was unable to complete. The generator runs a short test each week to keep the engine lubricated and the battery charged. A dead battery, a low oil condition, or a fuel supply issue typically prevents the exercise from completing.
Affected Models
- Generac Guardian 7043
- Generac Guardian 7172
- Generac PowerPact 7500E
- Generac Guardian 22kW
- Generac Protector 48kW
Common Causes
- Battery too discharged to crank the engine during the exercise window
- Low oil pressure prevented the engine from running through the exercise cycle
- Fuel supply interrupted — gas valve closed or propane/natural gas supply issue
- The generator was in manual OFF mode when the exercise time arrived
- An existing active alarm blocked the exercise from starting
How to Fix It
-
Check the generator's current mode — it must be in AUTO for exercises to run
The controller's mode switch must be set to AUTO for scheduled exercises to fire. If someone switched the unit to OFF or MANUAL, the exercise will not run and the alarm will set. Return it to AUTO and clear the alarm.
-
Inspect the battery and charging circuit
A weak or discharged battery is the most common reason an exercise fails to start. Check battery voltage — it should read 12.4–12.8V at rest. If the battery is below 12V, recharge or replace it. Also confirm the Charger Missing AC alarm is not also active.
-
Confirm fuel supply is open and sufficient
Check that the natural gas or propane supply valve is fully open. For propane, verify the tank level is not critically low. A fuel interruption during the exercise window will prevent the engine from running and set this alarm.
-
Check the oil level and top up if needed
Generac generators will not run if oil is low — the low oil pressure protection prevents engine start. Check the oil dipstick and add oil to the full mark if needed. Then clear the alarm and run a manual exercise to confirm.
-
Run a manual exercise to verify recovery
After addressing the above items, press and hold the OFF button then press AUTO to clear the alarm. Then run a manual exercise from the controller to confirm the unit starts, runs, and shuts down cleanly. The Exercise Failure alarm should not return.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Exercise Failure alarm mean my generator won't start in a real outage?
Not necessarily — the alarm means the scheduled test failed, which warrants investigation, but the generator may still start manually. However, if the cause is a dead battery, the engine genuinely cannot start automatically during an outage. Always fix the root cause of the exercise failure.
How do I change the scheduled exercise day and time on a Generac?
On generators with the Evolution or Nexus controller, navigate to the Exercise menu in the settings. You can set the day of week (e.g., Tuesday), time of day, and exercise duration. The standard factory setting is Tuesday at the time of installation. Consult your owner's manual for the exact button sequence on your controller model.
