Alarm: Not in Auto

Generac Generator

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Generac Alarm: Not in Auto means the generator's main switch is not set to the AUTO position. While in this state, the generator will not respond automatically to a power outage — it will not start when utility power fails. The fix is almost always simply turning the switch back to AUTO.

Affected Models

  • Generac Guardian Series
  • Generac Protector Series
  • Generac PowerPact Series
  • Generac Nexus Controller models

Common Causes

  • Switch was left in MANUAL or OFF position after maintenance or a manual test run
  • Switch was turned off during a service visit and not returned to AUTO
  • Switch contact has worn or failed and no longer holds the AUTO position
  • Someone unfamiliar with the generator turned the switch to stop an alarm

How to Fix It

  1. Locate the generator's main switch on the control panel

On most Generac standby generators, the switch is a rotary dial or toggle on the front of the control panel. It typically has three positions: OFF, MANUAL, and AUTO. The switch may be inside the control panel enclosure that you open with a key.

  2. Turn the switch to the AUTO position

Rotate or flip the switch to the AUTO position. The Not in Auto alarm should clear within a few seconds and the controller display should return to the normal Ready standby screen. The generator is now configured to start automatically if utility power fails.

  3. Verify the alarm has cleared on the controller display

After setting the switch to AUTO, confirm the display shows the normal standby screen — typically showing voltage, frequency, and no active alarms. If the alarm does not clear after switching to AUTO, check for other active alarms that may require attention.

  4. Test the automatic start function

To confirm AUTO mode is working, Generac recommends a weekly exercise cycle. If your controller is set to run an exercise, observe the next scheduled exercise start to verify the generator starts automatically as expected.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will Generac send me an alert if the generator is not in Auto mode?

Yes, if you have the Generac Mobile Link monitoring system set up, it will send a push notification or email when the Not in Auto alarm is active. This is one of the most valuable features of Mobile Link — you will know immediately if someone inadvertently moved the switch.

My switch is already in AUTO but the alarm still shows — what is wrong?

If the switch is physically in the AUTO position but the alarm remains, the switch contacts may be worn and not making a proper electrical connection, or there is a wiring fault between the switch and the controller. Have a Generac service technician test the switch continuity and controller input.
