Overload Indicator

Honda Generator

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Honda generators have three indicator LEDs on the front panel: green Output, red Overload, and red Oil Alert.
The red Overload light comes on when the load draws more current than the generator can deliver.
The output shuts off automatically.
Fix: turn the generator off, unplug all loads, restart, and reconnect items one at a time so you find what tripped the limit.

Affected Models

  • Honda EU2200i
  • Honda EU3000iS
  • Honda EU3000i Handi
  • Honda EU7000iS
  • Honda EB2200i
  • Honda EU1000i

Common Causes

  • Total connected load above generator rating
  • High-starting-current device (refrigerator, A/C, well pump) tripping the limit on startup
  • Damaged extension cord causing voltage drop and current spike
  • Short circuit in a connected device
  • Multiple high-draw items running at once
  • Generator at altitude (lower output capacity in thin air)

How to Fix It

  1. Turn the generator off.

Move the engine switch to OFF.
Wait for the engine to fully stop.
This is the only safe way to reset the overload condition — the unit will not just clear by itself.

  2. Unplug all loads.

Pull every cord from the generator's outlets.
Visual: outlets should all be empty.
This forces a clean restart with zero load.

  3. Restart the generator.

Pull the start cord (or press electric start on iS models).
    Engine runs.
The green Output LED comes on.
The red Overload LED is off.
The unit is now ready for load.

  4. Add loads one at a time.

Plug in the highest-priority device first (often the fridge).
    Wait 30 seconds.
If the Output light stays green, plug in the next item.
Continue until everything is running or until the Overload trips again.

  5. Identify the tripping device.

When Overload trips, the device you most recently plugged in is either drawing too much or has a startup current spike.
    Note which device that is.
Try running it alone to confirm — if it still trips by itself, your generator is too small for it.

  6. Account for starting current.

Refrigerators, freezers, well pumps, and air conditioners draw 3-5x their running watts during startup.
An EU2200i (1800W rated) cannot reliably start a typical fridge plus anything else.
Match generator size to startup demand, not running demand.

  7. Inspect cords and connectors.

Damaged extension cords cause voltage drop, which causes higher current draw, which trips Overload.
Replace any cord with cuts, melted plastic, or undersized gauge for the run length.
For 100-foot runs, use 12-gauge or heavier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will repeated overloads damage the generator?

Honda inverter generators handle overloads well — the protection circuit shuts output off before any damage occurs.
That said, repeated overloads usually mean the generator is undersized for the application.
Plan around what the generator can deliver rather than fighting against it.
